Lake Hydra is back — and that’s huge for diving in the Northeast.
Formerly Dutch Springs, this site has long been one of the most important training grounds for divers, instructors, and dive centers in the region. After closing for a few years, it reopened in 2024 as Lake Hydra thanks to the efforts of Ken Kraft, Jim Folk, and support from the new ownership.
Training dives, certifications, instructor exams, professional development — it’s all happening there again. And the best part? The legendary underwater features are still part of the experience.
For a whole lot of divers, this isn’t just a quarry. It’s where the journey starts.

Steel or aluminum? That’s one of the most common gear questions we get.
Aluminum tanks are typically more affordable and easier to maintain, which makes them a popular choice for many divers. The tradeoff? Aluminum is a softer metal, so it’s more likely to dent, scratch, or crack over time.
Steel tanks are stronger, more durable, and often last longer with proper care. They also tend to stay negatively buoyant throughout more of the dive, which can help with trim and weighting. But they do require a little more attention when it comes to corrosion and internal moisture.
A few things to consider:
Aluminum = lower cost, easier upkeep, more buoyancy shift during the dive
Steel = higher cost, more durable, less buoyancy change, longer lifespan
The best tank isn’t the same for everybody. Stop by or give us a call and we’ll help you sort through the options.
