One of the things I’m most passionate about as an instructor is continual learning. Over the last several years I’ve trained with more than 60 different instructors outside of my agency requirements. I am regularly asked who I recommend and will be doing regular Instructor Shoutouts.
Today I’m spotlighting Ed Calderon of edsmanifesto
I’ve met Ed multiple times and took a course from him hosted at TOPSKnives I enjoy his teaching, and it hits home for me, as I lived in Mexico for a few years in my younger years. The way he talks about awareness, culture, and real world personal security isn’t abstract. It lands.
Ed is from Tijuana. For over a decade he worked in counter narcotics, organized crime investigation, and public safety in the northern border region of Mexico. During that time he also ran executive protection details for high level government officials and visiting dignitaries, often in some of the most dangerous parts of the country.
That experience shaped the work he does now. He is widely recognized as one of the leading researchers and trainers on personal security coming out of Mexico. He has shared that knowledge with federal law enforcement, including the FBI and BORTAC, as well as Navy SEALs, foreign special operations units, and U.S. and Mexican intelligence personnel.
Today he travels North America doing security consulting and teaching seminars on anti-abduction, escapology, unarmed combat, region specific protection work, and unconventional edged weapons use. He’s also designed knives, and has been a guest on The Joe Rogan Experience multiple times.
What I respect is that Ed doesn’t teach theory from a distance. He teaches from lived experience, and he makes people think differently about the environments they move through. If you get the chance to train with Ed Calderon, take it. Highly recommended.

Most people test knife access standing up. But can you actually get to it in different positions? Here I’m showing accessing a fixed blade carried static-line from a seated position.

Does the blade cut what you need it to? Does your carry still work when you’re strapped in? Carry style and blade geometry matter. Training and knowledge matter more.

The blade demoed her is my design the SPARTAN MODE Agoge 2 by TOPSKnives it’s not currently available but if the interest was big enough to do another run I will!

One of the things I’m most passionate about as an instructor is continual learning. Over the last several years I’ve trained with more than 60 different instructors outside of my agency requirements. I am regularly asked who I recommend and will be doing regular Instructor Shoutouts.

Today I’m spotlighting Michael Seeklander of Shooting Performance and the American Warrior Society
I’ve trained with Mike several times and have been a member of the American Warrior Society for about a decade. I’ve watched his videos, read his books, and studied his material. He’s had a big influence on my development in multiple areas, not just shooting, but how to train, how to develop skills personally and in my students.

Mike is a Marine Corps combat veteran, he also worked law enforcement and
on the federal side he served as Branch Chief and Lead Instructor for the Fi****ms division with the Federal Air Marshal Service, and as a Senior Instructor at FLETC. He later became COO, Director of Training, and Senior Instructor at the U.S. Shooting Academy, where he was responsible for developing the training programs.
He’s also a high-level competitor. His record includes multiple world and national, state and local championships.

He has authored and produced instructional books and DVDs, podcasts, YouTube videos and has developed hundreds of lesson plans for training.

Mike is currently the Director of Education & Training at the USCCA as well as a former co-host of The Best Defense on the Outdoor Channel.

If you get the chance to train with Mike Seeklander, take it. If you can’t get to a live class, his books, videos, and the are worth your time. Highly recommended.

Be so busy improving yourself that you don't have time to pay attention to anything that distracts you from your growth.

INSTRUCTOR SHOUTOUT
Over the last few years I’ve trained with more than 60 different instructors outside of my agency requirements. I am regularly asked who I recommend and will be doing regular Instructor Shoutouts.

Today I’m spotlighting Jeremy Horn of Elite Performance MMA in Sandy, Utah.

Jeremy is one of my all time favorite professional fighters and one of the most humble but capable men you will meet. I’ve had instruction in fi****ms, MMA, and BJJ from Jeremy as well as trained alongside him in a few classes we both were attending as students. He brings the kind of depth of knowledge that only comes from a lifetime in the fight game.

Jeremy is a true MMA pioneer and veteran with a professional record of 170+ documented pro fights. He competed in the UFC, Pride, Bellator, and many other promotions. He has fought and beat fighters like Chuck Liddell, Chael Sonnen, and many others.

He is the owner of Elite Performance MMA in Sandy. He coaches there regularly, teaching MMA, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, striking, and related disciplines to everyone from beginners to serious competitors.

He has trained or coached many high level fighters over the years and brings that experience into every class. What stands out when you train with him is the depth of knowledge and passion for learning and helping others. His training is practical, and grounded in what works under pressure.

Jeremy is a very well rounded fighter who has also spent time learning, training and competing with fi****ms and has become an excellent shooter and fi****ms instructor.

If you’re in the Salt Lake / Sandy area and want solid MMA, BJJ, or striking instruction from a legitimate legend of the sport, get over to Elite Performance. Jeremy has an upcoming course with Defenders USA in Montana. Highly recommended you train with him if you get the chance.

Also today is his birthday. Make sure to wish him a Happy Birthday!
