🎙️ Rooted has officially launched!
Celebrate Parks & Recreation Month with us by listening to Episode 1 and discovering how recreation helps our community grow stronger together.
https://bit.ly/4yeIBbb - Spotify, or listen wherever you get your podcasts!
We’re embarking on something new here at That Podcast in Hutch, and I can barely tell you how excited we are about it!
That Podcast in Hutch has partnered with Hutch Rec to present a new Podcast - Rooted. It’s series of conversations that focus on how HutchRec builds community through its programming, events, and sports activities in Hutchinson and Reno County.
We’ll be exploring a different topic related to the world of recreation each month - and along the way we’ll share behind-the-scenes stories and examples of how HutchRec’s history in our community has made us richer, healthier, and more vibrant.
In this first episode, I visited with HutchRec executive director Tony Finley, and Assistant executive director Amy Conklin about HutchRec’s history, and how the organization has adapted to the changing landscape of entertainment and recreation over the years.
But we also visit about how recreation is more than recreation. It’s about connecting people, building community, and creating spaces where people can come together for shared experiences that create stronger bonds, and build bridges.
Rooted will air the second Tuesday of each month, so be sure to subscribe where ever you listen to your podcasts and watch your notifications for updates.
I’m excited to present the inaugural episode of Rooted - a story about the important role HutchRec plays in building a rich community. I learned a lot about the history of recreation in our community, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy this conversation as much as I did!
You can listen to Rooted with HutchRec anywhere you listen to podcasts, or you can find it at Salt City Podcasts.

Public Art is taking root in Downtown Hutchinson!
If you've walked through DCI Park recently, you may have noticed something blooming beneath the pergola. McPherson artist, Jennifer Weigel, is transforming six of the park's 12 pergola pillars into vibrant, whimsical sunflower murals.
As a nationally recognized mixed media artist, Jennifer's work has been exhibited in all 50 states.
Jennifer's murals are part of a larger placemaking initiative made possible through a partnership between Hutch Rec, DCI, and the Hutchinson Community Foundation. The project celebrates the idea that local spaces should inspire connection, reflect the people who call Hutchinson home, and create places where our community can thrive.
This project is just getting started. One pergola pillar was previously completed by Hutchinson artist Ghost, six more will be painted by Jennifer, and five more will soon be available through a Request for Proposals (RFP) for other local artists.
See the artwork come to life during Third Thursday: Arts & Eats on Thursday, July 16, from 6–8 p.m., where Jennifer will be painting live throughout the evening.
Public art helps transform shared spaces into places people remember. It sparks conversation, celebrates local creativity, strengthens community pride, and contributes to a vibrant downtown where residents and visitors alike want to gather.
We're excited to see this placemaking project continue to take root — one pillar at a time.

Happy 40th Birthday to the woman who somehow keeps the Recreation department running, remembers everyone's schedule, solves problems before the rest of us even know they exist... and still makes time to have fun.
Kendra, you make 40 look suspiciously like 29. (The sign said it, not us. 😉)
Thanks for leading with heart, laughing often, and proving every day that recreation isn't just what we do — it's who we are.
Here's to another year of building community, making memories, and reminding us all that growing older is mandatory... but growing up is optional.
Happy Birthday, Kendra! 🎉💛
