Just letting everyone know this Wednesday is our monthly Fight Night. Feel free to bring a friend to meet our merry group. Fencers from other clubs are welcomed to join us for an evening of camaraderie & fencing. Also, one of our members has been nominated for one of these… Honored to present to one of our own for representing the qualities of a knight.

Come join us to fence and celebrate. Afterwards we retire to our nearby Taqueria. Come hang out, catch up, talk fencing, history or whatever suits your fancy with likeminded people.

Fencers from other groups just send a note that we know you’re coming and aligned.

Instead of class this Wednesday we’ll be having a single rapier rated tournament. End Of Summer Competition. Be there at 7:30pm sharp. No pre-registration required and bring a friend. For members tournament is FREE. For non-members $20. Winner gets bragging rights.

A Fencing Journey 28 Years in the Making

AFO’s style of fencing didn’t come from one instructor, one treatise, or one system. It has developed through nearly three decades of instruction, competition, historical research and a constant effort to better understand the sword.

My personal journey began in 1998. My modern fencing foundation was shaped by Mauro Hamza, Andrey Geva, Tomasz Stusinski, Ahki Spencer-El and Oleksii Ivanov through foil and, primarily, saber. There were others but these are the teachers whom made a significant impact.

Throughout my journey of HEMA, Benoît Bouysset has played a critical role in opening my eyes to techniques and concepts of thrust fencing that would significantly influence how I approached historical rapier. Although, a modern instructor he understands why modern concepts are steeped in history.

Historical fencing began for me in 2013 with Fabris and Capo Ferro, eventually leading me deeper into Francesco Antonio Marcelli and the Neapolitan tradition. That study has continued through Terracusa, Rosaroll & Grisetti, Mattei and, most recently, Pallavicini.

Since 2022, I’ve also had the privilege of studying with Maestro Francesco Loda, who has become both a friend and mentor. His insight into Marcelli and the Italian tradition as a whole has been invaluable in helping connect historical research with practical fencing.

All of these influences have helped shape what we do today at AFO.

We aren’t trying to imitate books or plates. We study the sources, learn from living teachers, drill the principles, pressure-test them and fence.

And after 28 years, I’m still learning.

⚔️ NEW EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT – PILOT LONGSWORD TOURNAMENT ⚔️

We're excited to announce an important addition to the 7th Tournament of Defense.

Following the overwhelmingly positive response to the International Technical Rules discussions in Wichita, Kansas, we're taking the next step.

The Sunday Longsword Exhibition has officially been upgraded to a Pilot Longsword Tournament using the Tournament of Defense International Technical Rules.

This division will feature:
⚔️ A limited number of competitors
⚔️ International Technical Rules
⚔️ A chance to help shape the future of historical fencing competition

This pilot event is more than just another tournament—it's an opportunity to help refine and develop a ruleset designed to provide a fair, exciting, and internationally consistent competitive experience.

To make room for this exciting addition, the Team Rapier Event has been postponed and is now planned as a pilot division for Tournament of Defense 2027.

If you've been waiting for an opportunity to compete in longsword under this evolving ruleset, this is your chance.

This Wednesday is Fight Night!

Bring your weapons, your positive attitude, and be ready to put in some quality rounds in the Technical System, followed by plenty of open fencing. If you have a friend—or a fellow fencer from another school—invite them out. They’re always welcome to come hang out, train, and fence with us.

After class, we’ll head up the street for dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant to relax, recap the month, and enjoy some time together.

What a month it’s been.

The Tournament of Defense is also right around the corner. If you’re planning to compete, be sure to register before September 1. Registration is intentionally priced low right now to encourage as many schools and fencers as possible to participate. I’d love to see both our experienced competitors and our newer AFO members step onto the ring. That’s how we grow—not just as individual fencers, but as a school and a community.

Looking ahead, we’re also excited to announce that starting in August we’re adding Thursdays to our training schedule!

Class begins at the regular time, followed by free fencing. Thursdays will have a slightly more relaxed format. We’ll spend the first 30 minutes or so working through a focused drill, then open the floor for fencing.

From 8:30–9:30 PM, half of the floor will be reserved for members participating in the Rapier & Dagger / Smallsword class.

If you’re interested in adding the Rapier & Dagger/Smallsword program to your membership or have any questions about the new class, let me know and we’ll get you squared away.

There is so much happening right now, and it’s exciting to watch AFO continue to grow in such a positive direction.
