If you stepped into an alchemist’s workshop in the Middle Ages, you’d likely find bubbling cauldrons, mysterious potions, glowing furnaces… and plenty of salt.
Long before modern chemistry, medieval alchemists searched for the secrets of nature, believing they could unlock the mysteries of the universe. They were trying to turn lead into gold and brewing elixirs with mystical powers. Among the ingredients they prized most was salt, seeing it as a symbol of strength, stability, and the very substance of the physical world.
Today, there may be fewer cauldrons and more laboratories, but salt remains one of the world’s most essential natural resources—helping in the production of many things from food and pharmaceuticals to water treatment chemicals and thousands of everyday products.
The fires beneath the cauldrons have long since gone out.
But the story of salt is still being written.

Healthy horses depend on more than quality feed—they also need access to essential minerals.
Salt helps encourage proper hydration, supports normal nerve and muscle function, and replaces electrolytes lost through sweat, especially during hot weather or periods of increased activity. That’s why providing free-choice salt is an important part of many equine nutrition programs.
Ranch House® 4 lb Salt Bricks make that job simple. Their convenient size makes them easy to carry, place in pastures, paddocks, barns, or feeding areas, and reposition as needed—giving horses reliable access to salt wherever they roam.
Because when it comes to horse care, dependable nutrition should be as practical as it is essential!

Backpacks. Folders. Binders. Pencil cases.
The back-to-school checklist is full of essentials, but there's one ingredient behind many of them that rarely makes the list: salt.
Industrial salt helps manufacture many of the materials found in classroom supplies. Chlorine derived from salt is a key ingredient in producing durable PVC used in binders, folders, and pencil cases, while salt also plays an important role in textile processing, helping dyes bond to backpack fabrics.
As students check off their school supply lists and prepare for a new year of learning, United Salt is proud to provide an essential resource that helps produce many of the classroom essentials that kids need throughout the year.

Did You Know? Before Salzburg became famous for Mozart, it became prosperous because of salt.
The city's name literally means "Salt Fortress," a reminder that for centuries, salt was the engine behind Salzburg's growth. Rich deposits in the nearby Alps, combined with thriving trade along the Salzach River, made salt so valuable that it earned the nickname "white gold." The wealth it generated helped transform Salzburg into one of Europe's most influential cultural and economic centers.
Nearly a century later, that same prosperous city became the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. While Mozart's extraordinary talent made Salzburg famous around the world, the city's flourishing economy and magnificent churches, palaces, and public spaces had been shaped long before by the salt trade.
You could say that Mozart gave Salzburg its music—but salt gave it the foundation to become the city we know today!

School is back in session… but your pool didn’t get the memo!
While mornings are filled with school drop-offs and busy schedules, there’s still plenty of time for late-afternoon swims, weekend cookouts, and relaxing by the pool. A quick check of your salt level and pH helps ensure that your chlorine generator runs efficiently, so your pool is always ready when family and friends gather.
School may be back, but pool season isn’t over. A little maintenance now means more time enjoying every last swim.

Flavor House® Tip: Fresh-cut flowers brighten any room—but keeping them looking their best takes a little care.
Before arranging a bouquet, trim the stems at an angle, refresh the water every few days, and keep the vase clean. Some gardeners also swear by adding a small pinch of table salt to water in the vase as a traditional household tip to help keep the flowers fresh. Whether you’ve gathered blooms from your garden or picked up a bouquet from the market, a few simple steps can help you enjoy them a little longer.
Table salt isn't just for the kitchen. It comes in handy wherever fresh flowers are on display.

When summer temperatures climb in Baytown, a Thursday visit from the snow cone truck has become one of the season’s favorite traditions.
Every Thursday from June through August, employees at our Baytown plant take a well-earned break to cool off with a frozen treat.
What started two years ago as a simple summertime idea has become a favorite tradition. Team members from across the facility gather under the tent, catch up with coworkers, compare snow cone flavors, and enjoy a few minutes together. The tradition has become such a hit that employees from our neighboring Pure Salt facility often join in as well. It may only last a short time, but it’s something many employees look forward to each week.
It’s moments like these that remind us a great workplace is built on more than the work itself. It’s also about the traditions, connections, and shared experiences that bring people together.

People are remarkably good at noticing what is wrong.
A delayed flight.
A dropped internet connection.
A recipe that falls flat.
Sometimes the greatest impact comes from what people notice only after it’s gone.
What often goes unnoticed are the countless processes, products, and systems working exactly as intended. That perspective is familiar at United Salt.
Most people never think about salt until something changes. A flavor lacks depth. A process falls short. An expected result misses the mark. It’s a reminder that consistency isn’t a guarantee, it requires attention to the details and pride in the work.
