"PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS!!!”
While that is GREAT advice, and makes you exponentially safer, it is literally IMPOSSIBLE for ANY of us to do 100% of the time (myself included).
Of course everyone THINKS that they “always pay attention to their surroundings," but I GUARANTEE there are DOZENS of times EVERY SINGLE DAY that you leave yourself open to dangerous criminal encounters.
ENTERING AND EXITING YOUR OWN HOME is one that is very often overlooked.
You, or your spouse, or your children, entering your residence is an extremely dangerous “transitional space” that is often ignored because we feel safe once we are on our own property.
Living in apartments, condos, townhomes, etc, (even GATED) exacerbates this problem because the norm is to see strangers milling about.
A few simple things to think about:
- Someone walking down the sidewalk or street while you are walking to your door can typically sprint and be on top of you in ONE SECOND!
The Tueller Drill PROVES than an average person can close the distance of 21 feet (7 yards) in just 1.5 seconds, and some people can close that distance in as little as ONE SECOND!!!
- Would you, your children, your spouse even notice someone within 21 feet? What if they were just around the side of your home, or posing as a delivery person?
- Could you or your family possibly get inside and actually get the door locked in 1-1.5 seconds.
- 99% of front doors can be kicked in with just ONE KICK, so will the door even slow them down?
- Do you take precautions when stepping outside to get your mail or packages?
- When you go outside to take out the garbage, work in the yard, work on your home of vehicle, do you actually lock the door behind you or do you leave an opportunity for someone to slip inside?
- Do you have a gun and the training to defend yourself and your loved ones if approached by a violent criminal?
- Have you ever even practiced “VERBALIZATIONS” that can deter criminals and buy you precious time?
- Almost everyone freezes up the first time they try to respond to a potential criminal attacker, even just verbally in training. Things you haven’t made “reflexive” in training almost certainly won’t be there for your in a violent criminal ambush.
- If you’ve never practiced getting your gun out from concealment and getting hits on target under time pressure, stress, duress, while using verbalizations, moving, and making split second legal decisions in real time, the likelihood of you accomplishing any of that successfully is EXTREMELY low.
