The Adaptive Skating HTX program teaches children (ages 3-18) with disabilities how to ice skate! The program is hosted by Rice University Adaptive Skating and held at Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center.

Students receive 60 minutes of instruction with our volunteer coaches. We offer a 1:2 Student-to-Instructor ratio upon assessment. The estimated program cost is $120 for 6 weeks and includes FREE skate rental.

Our instructing team includes highly experienced skaters from Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M School of Medicine, and UTHealth Houston!

No skating experience is necessary! Students must bring a helmet. We also recommend gloves, snow pants, a jacket, and non-plastic elbow/knee/butt pads. Because of our low student-instructor ratio and small, intimate classes, limited spots are available!

All interested participants should have physical mobility and verbal and/or non-verbal communication. Parents must be present at all times during lessons.

🌟STUDENT SPOTLIGHT🌟 Introducing our wonderful students Bella and Julio Picon! Swipe to learn more about their journey in Adaptive Skating HTX😊

———

Bella (9) and Julio (11) are siblings with autism spectrum disorder, who have been a part of Adaptive Skating since Fall 2024. Since joining the program, both have gained confidence on the ice and enjoy spending time with the volunteers while learning new skills!

Bella was initially hesitant to step onto the ice, but with support from her coaches, her confidence has grown tremendously. Her favorite activity is “making snow” with her skates when she practices stopping!

Julio loves zooming across the rink and trying “jumps and twirls” with the help of his coaches. Throughout his time in Adaptive Skating, he’s become more aware of his surroundings and increasingly receptive to instruction.

Their parents share that Adaptive Skating has helped both children build physical and social skills while doing something they genuinely enjoy. They also express deep appreciation for the volunteers, highlighting their compassion, patience, and creativity in supporting Bella and Julio.

Congratulations, Bella and Julio, on completing another session of Adaptive Skating! We are so proud of everything you’ve accomplished. Thank you to their coaches this session: Tammy, darren, Anthony, and Pia!
