Happy National Dog Day!
This is a Dog Shark
What Exactly Is a Dogfish?
The term “dogfish” doesn’t refer to a single species, but rather to several small sharks within the Squalidae family. The spiny dogfish, Squalus acanthias, is the most well known and widely studied. These sharks are named for their dog‑like teeth and relatively small size. They are characterized by the presence of spines in front of each dorsal fin, a defensive mechanism against predators. Adult spiny dogfish typically reach lengths of around 3 to 4 feet, though some individuals can grow larger. Their coloration is generally a dusky gray or brown, often with darker spots or markings.
