Yesterday was a heavy one....yet a good one.
Ive been wanting go back to the TMC ICU to thank the staff that helped me live again. I was there for 34 days (5 unconscious). Drugged up, crazy dreams when I could sleep, in pain, hot, always thirsty, unable to sit up, couldnt breathe on my own, having to rely on everyone to do nearly anything. Had pneumonia twice and couldnt even tell it was bad cause of everything else going on. Sure its their "job", but I certainly couldn't do what these people do. I feel indebted to them in a way.
I was feeling emotional driving there. Meeting a rep at the garage (to get me up) I was feeling it. As soon as I got on the hallway of my old room, my eyes got glassy. Some of the staff came out and my voice was cracking as I tried to greet them and not lose it. This is why it took me almost two years to go back.
As many in ICU there dont leave there to lead a normal quality of life, I wanted them to see that sometimes what they do lets some one live their best life after. Or the life we often take for granted is changed after we leave there.
Several there said, they've never had some one come back. Which hit me. It was all of my friends and customers who came to see me, sent me notes, messages, calls, that helped me get out of there and back on my feet (literally), working, riding, and living again. Not sure if my one visit and a cake would have that impact on them, but I wanted them to know how much it all meant to me. Also how much it's meant to my three children, Dacree, Michael and Raymond as they have a dad still that can still be a dad with/for them.
Overwhelmed with emotions from that visit....all I can think of is how Grateful I am for this life.
Thank you all, life is precious.
Carry on ❤️

Yesterday I did a thing. First ride in the mountains was here 16ish years ago. Been coming to various parts of Colorado as much as I can...I'm not a "climber" but I love the suffering here. Ive never done "The Triple" here in Aspen. So at 50 and limited lungs post accident, why not. Maroon Bells, then Ashcroft, then a reload of bottles and a snack in town. Finally Independence Pass. I ran out of water with 4 miles to go. I stopped at the trailhead with just about a mile from the top. I was about to turn back. That mile takes a while, and I felt pretty bad. Thankfully some people there had a huge container of water they let me fill both bottles and had some lmnt. I was out of everything. So despite wanting to turn around nearly the whole way up...I made it. Upon starting the long (not easy or smooth) descent into town...I was suddenly getting glassy eyed. Flooded with the emotions of how long I pushed myself that day, the longest ride post accident, all that I've had to overcome these past nearly two years...I was about to lose it at 40mph. I had to refocus and save that for later. Which I did.
To my kids, my family, my friends, my teammates, my customers...thank you for still being here with me in this thing called life. I carried each of you up and down all 90 miles yesterday.
(Which would also explain my pace on the ascents🤣🤣🤣) roadbike
