Sandbox 4x4 Park Hawaii (Hawaii 4-Wheel)

nted a parcel of land in the Sand Island, Honolulu area to be used solely for off road recreation use, and this is when the Sandbox 4x4 park was granted a section of the parcel at the end of the proposed area. Headed by Reid Shimabukuro, President of the non-profit organization called the Sand Island Off-Highway Vehicle Association (SIOHVA), the Sandbox park started construction on 32 acres of area that was granted to them, only of which roughly 3 acres were given to the Sandbox 4x4 area. It was off to a rough start with environmental impact surveys, delays in planning and permitting, and other public issues that made it hard for the building of the park area. In late 2007, the green light was given to start clearing the land and shaping it into a 4x4 recreational area. With the support and volunteers of the 4x4 area, alongside Shimabukuro, were, The Hawaii 4x4 Association, headed by Mike Elliot, members from 4x4boyz.com, bentframe4x4.com, Oahu Jeepers, CDT machinery, and Bobs equipment, alot of work was done to begin landscaping the 4x4 area. In late 2008, the sandbox hit more delays with environmental issues, and planning and permitting. The 4x4 park would sit dormant for almost a year until these issues were resolved. Some of the supporters and volunteers were road blocked at this time and were waiting for updates on the status of the park. On August 24, 2009, an official groundbreaking ceremony was held to announce the official start and organizations of the park. In attendance were the Governor of Hawaii, Linda Lingle, Lieutenant governor, Duke Aiona, DLNR director at the time, Laura Thielen, Motocross hall of famer and local politician, John Desoto, and more state officals and supporters. From this day on, was smooth sailing for the 4x4 park. In 2010, Nick Pestana of Bobs Equipment was announced as 4x4 Park Manager. Nick contacted some of the early supporters and volunteers, along with new help which included a few members from the damn kid offroad club, Mark Duque of Plan B fabrications, Kalei Mooneyhan of Ballzdeep4x4, and a bunch of local 4-wheel enthusiasts to test the track with their vehicles and to provide some input on improvements. After many test and tunes, and constant work of reshaping the 4x4 park, an official Grand Opening event was held on October 2nd, 2011. With great success, this event provided the tools and support the 4x4 park needed to improve and organize future events. With less than half a year officially running, The Sandbox 4x4 park is continuing to improve its coordination, structure, organization, and events of the park for the 4 wheeling community, supporters, and off-road enthusiasts alike!!
