Nose Guards proved to be the best solution in reducing injuries caused by the surfboard nose tip. In the winter of 1986, the Nose Guard was introduced and tested by top professional surfers on the North Shore of Hawaii. I've been riding SurfCo's Proteck fins for over two decades, from their earliest versions, and now their performance and flex fins, which ride flawlessly. Prior to that I had so many fin cuts over the years, some cuts that got badly infected with staph, especially in Hawaii. In the early 90s, I got hit in the head with a hard fin and had a gash in the back of my skull worth 47 staples....

Dr. Nancy Smiley shares her holiday surf accident that ended up in with a trip to the ER: Christmas Eve, a day off! So happy, surfing on the N. Shore at Pua'ena with my new board. Waves were kinda small--4-5 feet face max. I took off on one and got churned, flipped into the air, and collided with my board. There wasn't much pain, but when I felt my leg, there was a gash with a weird lump....
