Everyone developing an RNG project asks the same first question. How clean does the gas need to be? The better question is how do you prove it stays clean.
Cleaning landfill gas is solved engineering. Membranes, amine systems, media beds. The technology works. What separates a plant that injects from a plant that gets shut in is not the treatment. It is the measurement sitting downstream of it, watching every minute of every day.
Here is why that matters. A treatment system is not static. Media loads up. Beds channel. A field that pulled clean last quarter starts pulling oxygen when a new collection well comes online. The gas that met spec at commissioning drifts, and it drifts slowly enough that nobody notices until the pipeline does.
The pipeline notices through your analyzers or through theirs. If it is theirs, you are already shut in.
So the real design decision on an RNG project is not just which treatment train to buy. It is where the measurement lives, what it watches, and whether it can hold accuracy in a gas stream that is wet, corrosive, and constantly shifting. Oxygen in fractions of a percent. Hydrogen sulfide in parts per million. Moisture at the dew point that forms hydrates under pressure.
This is a design decision, not a bolt-on. The best time to get it right is while it is still a drawing, not after the pipeline says no.
