High school boys soccer results from Wednesday, 9/23/26

Patton and Hibriten remained unbeaten in conference play with another pair of dominant shutouts Wednesday. Both improved to 5-0 in the league without allowing a conference goal, setting up Monday’s first-place meeting at Hibriten.

⚽ BEARS BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN!

Mya Rivera broke through in the 68th minute and the Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer made the goal stand in a 1-0 South Atlantic Conference victory over Emory & Henry Wednesday at the Moretz Sports Athletic Complex.

The win snapped a three-match losing streak for the Bears, who improved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in SAC play. Emory & Henry fell to 2-4-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.

Lenoir-Rhyne controlled play throughout the opening half but could not solve Emory & Henry goalkeeper Sophia Wagner. The Bears attempted 19 shots before halftime, placing 11 on goal, while limiting the Wasps to one shot.

The pressure finally produced the decisive goal with 22:01 remaining. Ava Hartman delivered the ball into the scoring area, where Rivera’s initial attempt struck the post. Rivera (pictured, courtesy of Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics) collected the rebound and put it away for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Hartman and Rosa Gonzalez were credited with assists.

Emory & Henry responded by taking five shots over the next nine minutes, but Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Madalyn Wright and the Bears’ defense protected the advantage. Wright stopped both shots she faced while recording the first shutout of her collegiate career.

The Bears finished with commanding advantages of 29-7 in total shots, 15-2 in shots on goal and 8-1 in corner kicks. Hartman led Lenoir-Rhyne with five shots, including four on goal, while Gonzalez placed all four of her attempts on target. Wagner made 14 saves for the Wasps.

The shutout was Lenoir-Rhyne’s third of the season. The Bears also improved to 5-0 all-time against Emory & Henry, with four of those victories coming by shutout.

Lenoir-Rhyne returns to conference play Saturday with a 4:30 p.m. road match against Newberry.

The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men's Soccer team surrendered three first-half goals as Emory & Henry defeated the Bears 4-1 Wednesday night at the Moretz Sports Athletic Complex.

The loss was LR’s first at home to the Wasps in the history of the series. Emory & Henry has won the last two meetings after Lenoir-Rhyne captured the first three.

Adel Kessas opened the scoring for the Wasps in the 10th minute, finishing an assist from Marcelo Lopes. An own goal less than three minutes later increased the Emory & Henry lead to 2-0.

Matheus De Araujo Pinto, assisted by Mila Mzamane, added a goal in the 34th minute to send the Wasps into halftime with a three-goal advantage.

Emory & Henry extended the lead to 4-0 when Shunsuke Nakamoto scored in the 66th minute.

Hector Taboada (pictured, courtesy of Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics) put the Bears on the scoreboard by converting a penalty kick in the 78th minute. It was Taboada’s second goal of the season.

The Wasps outshot Lenoir-Rhyne 11-6 and held a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. LR generated eight corner kicks while Emory & Henry did not have one.

Xairo Villalon led the Bears with four shots, placing two on goal. Taboada and Aaron Garrote accounted for LR’s other two shots.

Emory & Henry improved to 2-1-5 overall and 1-0-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Lenoir-Rhyne fell to 0-5-3 overall and 0-2-2 in conference play.

The Bears will travel to Newberry for a SAC match Saturday at 7 p.m.

HICKORY, N.C. - Thanks to her performance in the first two tournaments of the year, senior Eve Neild has been named The South Atlantic Conference Women's Golfer of the Week.

Neild (pictured, courtesy of Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics), who qualified for the NCAA Regional last year, earned two top-20 finishes to open the season, tying for 16th at the season opening City with Spirit Fall Classic and coming in second at the Savannah Lakes Women's Fall Invite.

At the City with Spirit Fall Classic, Neild tied for 16th with a 226 (+10), carding rounds of 76-75-75. She ranked seventh in the field with 37 pars over 54 holes. This past week at the Savannah Lakes Women's Invitational, Neild posted the best score to par of her career, taking second with a 213 (-3). The senior didn't record a round over par, going 71-72-70 to come within one stroke of medalist honors. She led the field in par 4 scoring (3.87, -4) and was tied for fifth with 39 pars.

This is Neild's first SAC Women's Golfer of the Week honor, and she is the first Bear to win the award since Danielle Bekker earned it in October of last year.

App State's Noah Martinson was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.

Martinson (pictured, courtesy of Appalachian State Athletics) led the Mountaineers to an impressive second-place team finish at last Friday's Southern Showcase in Huntsville, Ala. His ninth-place individual finish (in a field of 302 runners) helped App State place behind only No. 4 nationally ranked Alabama and ahead of such programs as Georgia Tech, Auburn and Clemson in the 29-team field.

The Carrollton, Ga., native controlled the team pace throughout the race, finishing with a stellar 8K time of 23:57.3, a mark that was nearly 12 seconds better than the previous best for the reigning Sun Belt Men's Cross Country Freshman of the Year.

Martinson will help lead the Black and Gold into their next competition when they host the Fire Tower Project on Friday, Oct. 2. The women's 6K will begin at 5:15 p.m., and the men's 8K will begin shortly after at 5:45 p.m.

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute volleyball swept Guilford Tech on Tuesday night, winning 25-10, 25-12 and 25-9.

The Cobras piled up 20 service aces, led by Draughn Volleyball grad, Bailey Mozeley’s seven. Lena Swiderska had 12 kills, Rebecca Bertoni added 11, and Abigail Hedgepath finished with 21 assists.

Caldwell is scheduled to visit USC Lancaster on Friday.

🏐 1,000 career kills for Emmaleigh Allen!

Emmaleigh Allen recorded her 1,000th career kill Tuesday as Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball swept Emory & Henry 25-14, 25-9, 25-16 at Shuford Arena.

Allen (pictured, courtesy of Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics) reached the milestone early in the third set, putting away a Camden Pasour set with the score tied at 3. She finished with a match-high 10 kills on 15 attempts and just one error. Allen is 43 kills away from entering Lenoir-Rhyne’s career top 10, according to the school.

The Bears led the opening set 17-13 before an Allen kill sparked an 8-1 closing run. They took a 9-2 lead in the second set and held the Wasps to just two kills in the frame. Emory & Henry briefly moved ahead 9-8 in the third, but LR responded with an 11-2 run to take control.

Brooke Aeschliman added nine kills and three service aces for Lenoir-Rhyne. Alicia Barbarito had 18 assists and four aces, Sydney Karjala contributed 12 assists, and Addison Vary led the Bears with 13 digs.

LR hit a season-high .386 and served a season-high 13 aces while limiting Emory & Henry to a .023 hitting percentage. The Bears improved to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Wasps fell to 0-11 and 0-7 in the SAC.

Lenoir-Rhyne hosts Newberry on Friday for Country Night. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Lenoir-Rhyne men’s golf finished tied for sixth at the Jay Jennison Cup on Tuesday, closing the three-round tournament at 11-under-par 853.

The Bears shot a 285 in the final round after posting a 294 and a 274 on Monday. Their 14-under second round tied for the lowest team round of the tournament.

Freshman David Gee, a Fred T. Foard High School grad, led LR with a 5-under 211, tying for 16th. Gee’s bogey-free, 7-under 65 in the second round was the Bears’ lowest individual round. Gee (pictured, courtesy of Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics) finished the tournament with 40 pars and just three bogeys.

Archie Mathers shot a final-round 68 to join Flynn Lewis in a tie for 21st at 3-under 213. Lewis opened with consecutive 70s before closing with a 73. Brady McIntyre finished tied for 30th at even-par 216, rebounding from an opening 77 with rounds of 68 and 71.

Phillipp Hottinger completed LR’s team lineup at 252. Playing as individuals, Stanislaus Koch tied for 59th at 227 and Nicklaus Newton tied for 66th at 230.

Host Flagler won the team title at 28-under 836. Lynn’s Tristan Wieland and Flagler’s Matthew French shared medalist honors at 12-under 204.

Lenoir-Rhyne returns to action Monday and Tuesday at the Newberry Wolves Fall Invitational at Edgewater Golf Club in Lancaster, South Carolina.
