There's cowboy tough, then there's Dean Thompson cowboy tough! 💪

After a rodeo accident in early 2026 led to a shocking cancer diagnosis, the Utah ba****ck rider, former world champion, and 2025 Fort Herriman PRCA Rodeo contestant put his career on hold for the ultimate fight.

Just months after completing treatment and being declared cancer-free in July, he returned to the arena with a stunning 85-point performance in Jerome, Idaho, earning second place and proving nothing can keep him down.

A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials. Watch out, world, here comes Dean Thompson! We are thrilled to follow his journey in the arena and look forward to seeing him compete again in Herriman.

Breakaway roping can be over almost as soon as it starts. A winning run may come down to just a few seconds of speed, timing, and teamwork between horse and rider.

Unlike tie-down roping, the rider stays in the saddle. Once the calf is caught, the rope pulls tight and breaks away from the saddle horn, stopping the clock. It sounds simple, but getting the horse in the right position, delivering an accurate loop, and making it all happen at full speed takes serious skill.

Currently sitting 3rd among Resistol rookies and 25th in the world standings, this Utah cowboy is poised for a strong finish to the season.
