After your kiddo has become a skilled ISR student chances are they are going to be excited about jumping in and swimming to you! What you don’t want to do is catch them before they even have a chance to go under.

Catching a child when they jump into the water prevents them from practicing vital self-recovery skills. Allowing them to surface, find their float to take a breath, and get to the wall or to you builds their muscle memory and problem-solving skills needed to actually survive an accidental fall.

So next time your instinct is to reach up and catch them, take a step back and allow them to engage with the skills and confidence they’ve earned—and if you feel like you need pointers or a practice with them in the water, voice it! The more confident you are in reinforcing the correct behaviors the more successful your swimmer will be!
