Here's what nobody tells you: when a kid seems to "not be listening," it's usually not defiance. It's a mismatch between how fast information is coming in and how long it takes their brain to catch up.

Auditory processing, working memory, and processing speed (among other cognitive skills) all play a role. None of these show up on a report card; they just show up as a kid who's still on step one while you're already on step three.

So many students who get by through high school suddenly hit a wall in college. As if the transition to greater independence wasn't enough, weak cognitive skills like working memory and processing speed can make it virtually impossible to keep up.

That was the case for this student. But instead of just accommodating or struggling through, his family decided to do something about it.

Here's the thing nobody tells you: not every gap between your kid and their friend is the same kind of gap.

A content gap just means they haven't been taught something yet (more time and instruction closes it).

A skill gap in things like processing speed, working memory, or focus doesn't close on its own. Left alone, it can actually widen.

This is so important to keep in mind as we head into a new school year.

Accommodations are bridges: they help struggling students access content and get through the day, but they don't build the skills that are making learning hard in the first place.

They are an important tool—but they shouldn't be the only one. Combining real-time accommodations with long-term skill building is critical to give your child the foundation they need to learn with more ease (especially once they leave their supportive school environment).

It's not the school's job to build cognitive skills, so that's why we love to partner with families who are navigating IEP meetings, accommodation plans, and learning difficulties to shine a light on the cognitive piece of the puzzle. 🧩

Because when you understand what's at the root, the rest of what you're seeing makes so much more sense.

Slow processing speed doesn't always look the same.

For some kids (and adults!) it's the sloth: every task takes forever, even simple ones. Directions have to be repeated. Getting ready for school turns into a 45-minute odyssey.

For others, it's the "Lucy" end of things: rushing to keep up, which means skipping steps, careless mistakes, and work that has to be redone.

Both versions are exhausting. Both can look like "not trying hard enough" when really, the brain is working overtime just to keep pace.

Here's the hopeful part: processing speed isn't fixed. It's a trainable cognitive skill, which means with the right kind of brain training, both ends of the spectrum can get faster, more accurate, and less overwhelming.
