Most store owners think about bookkeeping as something they need to handle for tax season.

Accurate financial records do much more than help your accountant prepare a return.

They help you:

* Understand whether the store is actually profitable
* Apply for financing
* Negotiate a lease
* Document losses for an insurance claim
* Prepare for a relocation
* Establish the value of the business
* Eventually sell or transfer the store

Your tax return, profit and loss statement, balance sheet, and cash flow management system each show you something different. Together, they give you a much clearer picture of the business.

You may not be planning to borrow money, relocate, or sell anytime soon. Still, waiting until one of those moments arrives to organize years of financial records creates a much harder job.

Your books are not only about reporting what already happened. They help you make decisions about what happens next.
