On September 11, 2001, 19 Islamic al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners:
* American Airlines Flight 11 struck the World Trade Center’s North Tower.
* United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.
* American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon.
* United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought back—preventing it from reaching its suspected Washington target.
Both World Trade Center towers collapsed, devastating Lower Manhattan.
• Victims killed in New York City: 2,753
• Killed at the Pentagon: 184
• Passengers and crew killed on Flight 93: 40
• Total innocent victims killed on 9/11: 2,977
• People physically injured: More than 6,000
The 2,977 victims included 343 FDNY firefighters, 23 NYPD officers and 37 Port Authority police officers. Victims came from more than 90 countries. The official memorial count remains 2,977 innocent lives lost. Reuters
The continuing death toll as of September 2026:
The attacks released an enormous toxic cloud containing pulverized concrete, glass fibers, asbestos, metals and combustion chemicals. Responders, cleanup workers, office workers, residents and students subsequently developed cancers, respiratory illnesses and other diseases.
2026 current reporting estimates:
* More than 145,000 people are receiving treatment for 9/11-related conditions.
* Approximately 9,677 responders and survivors have died from recognized 9/11-related illnesses, including about 5,892 cancer deaths.
* More than 400 FDNY members alone have subsequently died from World Trade Center-related illnesses.
Approximately 12,654 innocent people have died directly or subsequently from the 9/11 attacks—2,977 on the day itself and roughly 9,677 from related illnesses afterward.
* Unresolved Identification: More than 1,100 families are still awaiting definitive identification of their loved ones’ remains, though ongoing advancements in DNA technology continue to provide new matches.
