By now I am sure everyone knows about the shooting that rocked our community Friday night. First and foremost, using a gun to settle a argument is NEVER the solution; using a firearm to defend yourself is ALWAYS a last resort.
The following slide appears in EVERY fi****ms class I teach. If you have taken any of my classes you have seen me go through this slide and then dissect it:
Americans enjoy a Right that citizens of many other countries do not—The Right to own fi****ms. But, with this Right come responsibilities. It is the gun owner’s responsibility to store, operate and maintain his or her fi****ms safely. It is the gun owner’s responsibility to ensure that unauthorized or untrained individuals cannot gain access to his or her fi****ms. It is the gun owner’s responsibility to learn and obey all applicable laws that pertain to the purchase, possession and use of a firearm in his or her locale. Guns are neither safe nor unsafe by themselves. When gun owners learn and practice responsible gun ownership, guns are safe.
Now, read that slide again...it is the gun owner's responsibility to secure their fi****ms. It is still unclear how the firearm was obtained that was used in the shooting. Under Indiana law it is illegal for anyone under 18 to possess a firearm.
So, everyone, please, take measures to make sure your fi****ms a secure and can not wind up in the hands of unauthorized persons. Nothing can completely stop the theft of property, but we can all take measures to make it difficult for a unauthorized person to access our fi****ms.
