Classical Pilates ASMR đ
My studio is equipped with Gratz, Pilates Designs, Legacy and Contrology apparatus.
All of these are reputable classical pilates manufacturers. I have different pieces because I like certain elements on some over others and it allows me to select the apparatus that fits the clients needs best.
Some have more padding, less padding, a slightly different footbar angle, a little more length (80â vs 86â) but the most important thing is that these are the closest designs we have to Joe Pilates original. All have four springs, caster wheels, leather straps, the drag of the carriage, and the original feel of Joeâs Reformer.
The work of Pilates truly makes sense when you practice it on the apparatus it was designed on. Every millimeter matters. When you feel the difference, you know the difference.
These are solid metal pieces, hand crafted, with very specific specs.
I chose metal because of the longevity in them - Iâd seen a lot of wood reformers over the years that were dirty, chipped, dinged and yellowed. Though beautiful to begin with, I loved the wood, but truthfully I didnât trust that others would take care of them the way I would. The metal reformers have a raw, lasting, elemental feeling to them.
Many thanks to the manufacturers in our industry keeping classical Pilates legacy continuing on. Gratz Pilates Pilates Designs, LLC Contrology by Balanced Body
Authentic Pilates
A studio designed to help clients achieve balance, awareness and efficiency in movement.
One of the things I love about Classical Pilates is that itâs based on the foundational mechanics of the body. You can distill a function down to its smallest components, rebuild and reintegrate. Iâve always sought out other instructors that teach this way for my own body - resulting in a more unified coordination of my movement, less pain, and a greater understanding of how and why we do the exercises.
I donât have a lot of patience for movements that induce âjunk fatigueâ or are complex for the sake of being complex. I prefer simple, meaningful and effective movements for true change in physique and improved function. This is exactly why Classical Pilates was created, and why its methodology has been so rock solid for well over 50 years. The bodyâs anatomy doesnât change. So why make it more complex than it needs to be?
âŚmake Pilates Contrology again..
Not just about the order of the exercises.
Make it about the fluid connection of your anatomy moving in the way it was designed to move with the support and challenge of a spring-based system.
Make it about discovering and increasing your awareness of your body in space.
Make it about taking time to slow down and think: this action -> this response -> this consequence
Be curious and explorative, yet recognize proper boundaries keep us from harm.
Make it about sharing this work with others and remember where it came from.
Make it about being guided by the principles: control, precision, centering, flow, breath, concentration..
Make it about remembering that part of control is letting go.
And make it about taking all of these things with us as we âReturn to Lifeâ
A certification shows you met the minimum requirements, but what happens after that?
Itâs not more certificationsâŚitâs Pilates âgrad-schoolâ - in the form of continued private sessions, workshops, intensives, observation, practice, practice, practice and study.
The scope of movement of the body is so vast and broad itâs hard to say it can be learned in a few months or even a few years.
Teachers, keep learning.
Become more than an instructor.
Learn the movements inside and out.
Question everything.
Respect those who teach you.
And pass on what you know to the fullest measure.
Hold nothing back.
Utmost gratitude to those who have helped shape and form me into the teacher I continue to become. Everyone has their own approach to the work of Pilates and our obsession for it unites us.

Moving is an incredible way to forge new connections.
Youâre taking your brain out of a familiar environment and putting it into a brand new one where there are no prior associations.
There is no old identity.
So your brain has to build this new construction of who you are in this new space.
The old is gone. A new creation here.

You canât micromanage in teaching.
Just because it was originally called âcontrolâology you have to remember that the teacher isnât the one practicing the control, itâs the student.
Theyâre learning awareness, agency, regulation, control.
Just because you said a cue and they didnât get it doesnât mean the learning process isnât happening.
Its input, trial, error, progress, redirect, trial, success.
As a teacher, youâre practicing awareness and guiding the experience. Offering routes and options. Not demanding an outcome based on perfect ideals.

In my early 20âs I used to have a strength trainer who told me this -
"Before you work out, you've got to work in."
At the time, I heard it, but sort of brushed it off.
It wasnât until I had a herniated disc in my late 20âs and couldnât walk that I was forced to stop and think about how I was moving.
I had been working out, pushing hard, thinking more was better.
The other thing he told me was âif you donât slow down, your body will slow you downâ.
With those two ideas in mind I took the time (not that I had a choice) to learn how to work in instead of out.
It was a slow process, limited truly by what my body was capable of doing that day.
I connected to what was meaningful in movement, what was supportive, what was challenging, when to push, and when to rest.
Pilates was that modality for me. It âreturned me to lifeâ (as is the title of the creatorâs book) paired with prayer and surrender to the one who created life itself.
Donât love working out? Try working in. It might work out.
Most people donât realize what theyâre missing until they feel it.
Hands-on spotting here isnât just a cueâitâs a system of support and guidance. Every touch has intent. It directs, refines, and teaches your body where to go and how to get there.
Paired with a deep understanding of anatomy, it turns movement into something clear instead of confusing. Youâre not just going through the motionsâyouâre learning how your body actually works.
When you understand the anatomy behind the movement, everything changes. You recognize your patterns and stop compensating- a pattern that results in discomfort and pain. Instead, you start organizing your body with intention, design, fluidity and efficiency.
This is what sets us apart.
Not more exercisesâbetter ones. Not more effortâbetter direction.
This comes from years in specific study of systems of movement, anatomy and application.
Thatâs the difference of Authentic Pilates.

Pilates begins as something physical, but it rarely stays there.
Externally, the body refines, movement organizes, and strength becomes more efficient than forceful.
Internally, awareness begins to develops in parallelâyou start to register subtle shifts, distribute effort more intelligently, and recognize patterns you didnât know you were repeating.
Over time, it becomes less about doing exercises and more about how youâre in your body while doing them.
That relationship tends to extend outward.
You move with a sense of calmness, clarity, and ease. Many find they think and communicate with more precision, and carry a ârestful yet aliveâ kind of presence into their interactions.
The visible changes are real.
But the more lasting shift is relational -
how you understand, respond to, and inhabit your body, and how that shapes the way you meet the world.
