Itasca County Family YMCA Announces Leah Geisler as New Chief Executive Officer

The Board of Directors of the Itasca County Family YMCA is pleased to announce the appointment of Leah Geisler as the organization's next Chief Executive Officer, following a thorough and comprehensive search process.

Leah emerged as the top candidate from a strong pool of qualified applicants. Throughout the search process, it was her genuine passion and enthusiasm for the YMCA's mission and her commitment to serving the people of Itasca County that set her apart. The Board was impressed not only by her leadership experience and accomplishments, but also by her excitement for the opportunity to lead an organization dedicated to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

"Throughout the search process, Leah stood out not only for her impressive professional accomplishments, but also for her genuine passion for serving others and strengthening our community," said Sam Evans, Chair of the Itasca County Family YMCA Board of Directors. "Her values align closely with the YMCA's mission, and we are excited to welcome her as our next CEO. We are confident her leadership will have a lasting positive impact on our members, staff, and community."

"I'm thrilled to begin serving the Y and our community in my new role as CEO," said Geisler. "It's an honor to carry on the legacy of this incredible organization and ensure it continues to thrive."

Leah brings extensive nonprofit leadership experience and a deep commitment to community service. For nearly a decade, she served as Executive Director of the Forward Health Foundation in Deer River, where she worked closely with the board of directors to transform the organization from a fledgling foundation into a trusted and impactful community partner. During her tenure, Leah demonstrated exceptional leadership, strategic vision, and a strong ability to build relationships that advance meaningful community initiatives.

A collaborative and relationship-driven leader, Leah has consistently brought diverse stakeholders together around shared goals. Her ability to engage partners, foster trust, and inspire collective action has been a hallmark of her professional success.

In addition to her nonprofit experience, Leah is the founder and owner of Wildwood Design Co., where she has successfully built and managed a thriving business serving clients throughout northern Minnesota. Through both her business and nonprofit work, Leah has demonstrated an ability to combine vision, creativity, and disciplined ex*****on to achieve meaningful and lasting results.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Leah is deeply engaged in community service. She serves as a board member and volunteer with the Itasca Friendship Club and is a co-founder of the Foster Hope Fund, which provides scholarships and financial assistance to local children in foster care. She is also an active volunteer with the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, further reflecting her dedication to strengthening the communities she serves.

As a lifelong resident of the Grand Rapids area, Leah is deeply invested in the future of the region and understands the unique opportunities and challenges facing local families, youth, and communities. Her passion for service, commitment to collaboration, and proven leadership make her exceptionally well-suited to lead the Itasca County Family YMCA into its next chapter.

Leah's first day as CEO will be October 5, 2026. To ensure a seamless leadership transition, she will work side-by-side with current CEO Joni Namyst who will be retiring at the end of 2026. Joni is excited to partner with Leah during this time, sharing her knowledge and experience to ensure a smooth transition for YMCA staff, members, volunteers, and the broader community.

Please join us in welcoming Leah Geisler as the new CEO of the Itasca County Family YMCA. We look forward to the exciting future ahead under her leadership and to supporting her as she continues the YMCA's longstanding commitment to serving the families and communities of Itasca County.

During our recent training week, our WeeFolks staff took on the role of the child and experienced open-ended art firsthand.

At WeeFolks, we believe in process over product. Art isn’t about every child making the same picture or copying the teacher’s example. It’s about giving children the freedom to experiment, explore materials, make choices, try something new, and create something that is uniquely theirs.

So our staff dug in, grabbed a variety of art materials, and made their own masterpieces. And let’s just say… the creativity (and fun!) was REAL. ❤️

Now, our teachers are taking that experience right back into the classrooms and creating more opportunities for our WeeFolks kids to explore, experiment, and discover what they can create.

Because there’s no “right” way to make art when the process is the point. 🎨💛
