Lately, Iāve noticed more and more businesses and events popping up around Grand Rapids using the spelling āHausā in their name. Iām not claiming I started a trend (although I do seem to find myself on the front end of trends when it comes to show themes and marketing ideas š), but it has made me reflect on why I chose the name Haus of Glass Dance in the first place.
The meaning runs much deeper than a unique spellingā¦the name Haus of Glass Dance wasnāt chosen by accident.
The most obvious meaning is that āGlassā is my last name. This business is something I built, nurtured, and poured my heart into. It has become a second home for me in every sense of the word. So Haus of Glass felt like a natural extension of who I am.
The deeper meaning comes from the spelling of *Haus* itself.
In ballroom/drag cultureāa vibrant movement created by underground communities in New York City in the 70ās and 80āsāpeople formed chosen families called āHouses.ā These Houses were led by āMothersā and āFathersā who provided mentorship, support, belonging, and protection. Members competed together in balls, but more importantly, they shared a sense of home under one symbolic roof.
Many Houses became known as the āHouse ofā a particular family name or leader. These houses became legendaryānot because of a building, but because of the people inside them.
That spirit deeply resonated with me.
When I created Haus of Glass, I wanted it to feel like more than a dance studio. I wanted it to be a place where people could arrive exactly as they are. A place where they could let their guards down, take risks, grow, create, heal, and be surrounded by people who genuinely care about them.
A place where everyone belongs.
Now, I chose the more modern & Germanic spelling āHausā to honor the Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ communities that originally founded New Yorkās ballroom Houses, while respectfully creating something that still remained uniquely my own.
Whether youāve danced with us for years, taken a single class, performed in one show, or simply supported from afar, you have helped shape what this Haus has become.
Thank you for being part of the Haus of Glass family. š¤
