We never know what to expect when I ask people to participate in the public comment process regarding wildlife management.

This is amazing how many people weighed in on a recent petition the commission will discuss this week. It’s encouraging to see how many people took the time to comment, and it was especially great to see just how many names recognized while scrolling through them all. We truly believe your efforts will be worthwhile.

It’s worth noting there was a significant amount of comments opposing this petition that were from nonresidents. It’s also worth noting we passed a trapper reciprocity bill in the 2023 legislative session. This means this petition has the ability to negatively impact those who have Montana on their bucket list of states to trap.

We appreciate everyone who went out of their way to spread the word about this petition. This round of the commenting process just goes to show we are NOT the minority that anti-trapping groups make us out to be. Just as the ballot initiative the petitioners previously pushed, it’s clear what the majority supports!

*there were 3 additional comments that mentioned we shouldn’t kill wolves, especially the Mollie’s pack. Those weren't considered as being relevant for this topic.

MOGA has submitted three formal letters ahead of the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission Special Meeting on September 24, 2026.

We strongly oppose the petition to mandate 24-hour trap check intervals on public lands, a blanket regulatory requirement without scientific justification Montana Trappers Association

We strongly oppose the petition to require mandatory bear spray carry for hunters, which overrides the judgment of experienced sportsmen without supporting evidence.

And we strongly support R1 Commissioner Wargo's proposal to pursue MAPA rulemaking and adopt a science-based, adaptive predator management policy (Alternative A), which will provide wildlife managers the tools to protect ungulate populations in the districts and regions where predator pressure is most critical.

MOGA's positions are grounded in science, field experience, and a commitment to healthy wildlife and habitat for every hunter and sportsman in Montana. We will continue to represent those values at every Commission meeting.

Grizzly bears in the state of Montana are beyond recovered. It is time to remove them from the ESA. But at this rate, we will continue to have to contend with these beasts, and it will only get worse.

This was taken at Polson Bay on Flathead Lake in Polson, near the Polson Bay Golf Course. A local news report published today says two grizzly bears were recently observed swimming in Polson Bay and climbing onto docks near the golf course.

The course consists of an online component, make sure that you complete this first!

Residents must be at least 12 years-old to purchase a Class C trapping license. Youth 6-11 years old, must purchase a Class 0-3 trapping license and are exempt from the requirement to take trapper education and are limited to what animals they can trap.

The course consists of an online component, an in-person field day, and written test. This general trapper education course also satisfies the Montana wolf trapper education requirement.

Former Wyoming Game and Fish Director Brian Nesvik, now the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service chief, wants to redefine what it means to “take” animals protected under the Endangered Species Act. Critics say that would get more grizzlies killed in Wyoming.

It's good to see common sense being employed to bring original intent back to a law.

Of course, the animal rights organizations have nothing but nonsense to spew. Redefining this one four-letter word is going to have massive negative implications on their money-making playbook.

Today, September 16, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry passed Committee Chairman John Boozman’s (R-AR) proposed Farm Bill. Thanks to Senator Boozman’s leadership, excellent committee staff work, and voluminous opposition from hunters, no extreme animal-rights amendments were offered during the bill’s previous mark-up. As a result, the committee-passed version of the Farm Bill to be considered by the full Senate is clean of anti-hunting and extreme animal-rights language. Link in comments 👇

Trust for Public Land (TPL), Stimson Lumber Company (SLC), and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP) today announced the permanent protection of 20,629 acres of working forestland in Lincoln, Mineral, and Sanders Counties.
