Starfish Infant Aquatics

Starfish Infant Aquatics We teach self-rescue swimming lessons for children ages 6 mos-6 yrs old, emphasizing safety & fun!

In just 6 weeks, your child could learn in weeks what it takes some kids months or years to learn! Starfish Infant Aquatics is a unique swimming lesson program for children. Our intensive, one-on-one lessons take kids from hesitant and unsafe around the water to being confident swimmers within a matter of weeks. While the focus at Starfish Infant Aquatics is on survival and water safety, children ages 6 months-6 years old learn solid swimming skills that give them a strong foundation for a lifelong love of the water. Teaching competence before confidence, kids learn that aquatic environments are to be respected but also offer ample opportunities for fun! Lessons are individualized to each child’s physical and emotional development, meeting them where they are each day. Depending on the child, a lesson could involve working strictly on survival skills like learning to rollover and float or swimming to the wall, or progressing to more advanced skills like diving sticks or learning to jump in safely (with an adult right there, of course!). Given the unforgiving nature of water and the natural curiosity of children, safety around the water cannot be emphasized enough. No one is “drown proof,” but children as young as one year old are developmentally ready to learn aquatic skills that can give them a shot at survival, if heaven forbid they ever need to use them. There is no substitute for constant, eyes-on supervision and having physical barriers to the water. But if an accident happens, the best person to in charge of safely handling the situation is the child who can calmly and confidently handle himself in the water. Plus, how awesome is it when you take your family to the neighborhood pool, and your little starfish gets to show off his amazing swimming skills? Main lessons are held in Glen Allen, VA, convenient to Richmond, Midlothian and Mechanicsville, and also at the Weinstein JCC. Please contact me if you have a group of 6 or more and would like lessons closer to you.

September has a way of making water safety feel like a summer problem.

School starts, schedules change, the pool bag gets shoved into a closet somewhere, and our brains move on. 🙃

But the thing is, our kids are still around water—even if it’s just indoor pools, grandparents’ houses, backyard ponds, vacations, or one of those warm afternoons that turns into, “Can we go swimming?”

So while everything else shifts into fall mode, let’s make sure we keep the water-safe habits.

→ Lock doors and gates that lead to water.

→ Pick up pool toys when swimming is over so there’s nothing tempting kids back toward the water.

→ Keep close, active supervision anytime kids are around water, even when swimming wasn’t part of the plan.

If you’re ready to add survival swim skills to that safety plan, you can learn more here ⬇️

Nothing beats the peace of mind that comes from knowing your child has survival swim skills. 🩵

Not because those skills replace supervision, barriers, life jackets, or any of the other layers of protection we use around water, but because you’ve given your child the one layer that’s in their control. 🛟

Unskilled doesn’t necessarily look nervous or hesitant. Sometimes it looks like a child who’s thrilled to jump in, wants to be underwater constantly, has zero fear about leaving the steps, and would happily launch themselves toward the deep end every five minutes. 🙃

That enthusiasm is wonderful, but just isn’t the same thing as knowing what to do once they’re in the water.

In fact, sometimes the kids who love the water most are the ones who are most eager to get in before they have permission—or the skills to match that confidence. 😬

Your child can absolutely love the water and still need to learn to navigate it safely!

We don’t want to take away that love for the water.

We want to build the skills underneath it. ⭐️

When your child can swim independently, it doesn't mean you stop being right there. It means your time in the water together can become less about physically supporting every movement and more about building skills, confidence, and really enjoying the water as a family.

Instead of holding them every second, you can swim with them, you can play together, and help them practice new skills!

You can watch them explore what THEY can do in the water while you stay close, supervise, and enjoy it with them.

They have more options, and so do you. 🩵

It's the time of year for germs again. 🙃 But a runny nose doesn’t always mean you have to miss a swim lesson—and a normal temperature doesn’t always mean your child is feeling well enough to swim.

So if you’re wondering, "Do we go today or not?" Save this guide. 👀

In general, we’re looking at the whole picture:

→ What’s their temperature?
→ Is their activity level normal?
→ Are there any stomach symptoms?
→ Are we dealing with a middle ear infection or swimmer’s ear?

And, of course, if your doctor recommends that your child stay out of the water for any reason, follow their guidance.

If you’re ever unsure whether your child should attend lessons, just reach out to your instructor. We’re always happy to help!

On the waitlist and wondering what can you do in the meantime to make your child safer in and around the water?

→ Stay within arm's reach. Young children need active, hands-on supervision around water.

→ Skip the puddle jumpers. They can give children a sense of independence they don’t actually have while promoting a vertical body position in the water. If your child isn’t independently skilled yet, you are their support.

→ Put physical barriers between your child and the water. Rules matter, but young kids explore, test boundaries, and forget. Use layers like secure pool fencing, locked gates, door locks, and alarms so getting to the water requires more than remembering a rule.

→ Use a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket around open water when appropriate.

And these layers don’t disappear once your child learns to swim.

Skilled swimmers still need supervision, barriers, and appropriate life jackets (around open water).

We’re not waiting for lessons to start before we start building safer habits around water. 🩵

You already put in the work. Now let’s keep those skills moving forward!

Swimming throughout the fall and winter gives your child a chance to keep using what they’ve learned, stay comfortable in the water, and continue building strength and coordination instead of taking several months off and picking everything back up next summer.

We currently have a few progression spots available for our GRADUATES!

If your child is ready to keep swimming, check current Progression availability here ⬇️

If your baby fell in the water alone, their ability to find their own air is the last layer of protection they have.

Learning to roll to their back and float independently gives them something they can do while grown-ups are on the way.

This small skill has a very big job. That’s why we teach it so early. 🩵

Registration is open now for new students!
