I was texting a guy this morning who told me: "I want nothing more in my life than to save my marriage."
I said, "sir, that's the wrong mindset."
He said, what do you mean?
Here's what I mean.
Your wife left. Or she checked out of the marriage. Or she's cheating. Or she looked you in the eye and said "I don't love you anymore."
And now you're in pain.
That pain? That's smoke coming out from under your hood. That's the check engine light on your dashboard, lit up, screaming at you.
And what are most men doing?
Still driving.
Foot on the gas. Smoke pouring out. Light blinking. And you're thinking, if I can just make it to the destination. If I can just get her back. If I can just save this thing.
I'm telling you right now, you're wasting your pain.
Some of you will never make it to that destination. Not because she's gone. But because you refuse to pull over to the side of the road and pop the hood to see what the hell is actually happening in there.
Your heart is the engine. Your mind is the transmission.
And there are things happening inside of you that either caused this or were a massive contributing factor to why your marriage broke down.
That's not me being cruel. That's me handing you the only thing you actually have control over.
So stop focusing on her.
Stop focusing on the marriage, and the timeline, and what she said to her friend, and whether he's still in the picture.
The number one thing and the ONLY thing you have to do right now is focus on you.
Focus on you.
I know you want to blame. Blame her, blame him, blame the marriage counselor, blame the last five years.
But hear me on this: where there is blame, there is shame.
Where there is blame, there is shame.
You blame because it hurts less than looking at what you'd find if you actually opened that hood.
There ARE signs to look for. There is a way to read whether this thing can come back. I'll lay those out for you.
But before we get anywhere near that — it is imperative that you start looking at you.
Pull the car over, brother.
Pop the hood.
