“I just don’t want to lose any more distance.”

I understand why that matters.

It’s rarely just about the number on TrackMan.

It’s the 7-iron that became a 6.
The par 4 you used to reach comfortably.
Your buddy who suddenly started flying it past you.

And sometimes the thought:

“Is this just what happens now?”

Some change with age is inevitable.

But before assuming there’s nothing you can do about it, find out what opportunities are still there.

Movement.
Strength.
Power.
How efficiently you’re using what you have.

You may have more available than you think.

Being “fit for golf” isn’t about touching your toes.

And it isn’t about how much you can squat.

Golf asks your body to do a lot.

Move.
Create force.
Create it quickly.
Repeat it.
And recover from it.

Where one golfer needs more mobility, another might need strength, power or simply more capacity.

The goal isn’t to become great at the gym.

The goal is to build a body that supports your golf.

One of the easiest assumptions to make as a golfer is:

“I’m getting tight. I probably need to stretch more.”

Maybe.
But maybe not.

That’s why I don’t like starting with exercises.

First, I want to understand what your golf is asking from your body.

Then we look at movement, strength, power and how you’re actually using those physical qualities.

Sometimes we confirm exactly what you suspected.
Sometimes we find something completely different.

Either way, now we have a reason behind what we’re doing.

Assess first. Then build the plan.

DM me ASSESS if you want to find out what your body may be leaving on the table.

I’m working on a few things in my own swing right now.

And just like I tell my clients, I want to know whether my body is making those changes easier or harder.

For me, one of the things I’m paying attention to is thoracic rotation.

That doesn’t mean a mobility drill magically fixes my golf swing.

I still have to work on the golf.

But if I’m asking my body to create a movement it doesn’t have access to, I’m making an already difficult game even harder.

The swing work and the physical work can support each other.

That’s how I approach my own game, too.

I shot +4 in a Mid-Am qualifier recently.

+1 got into a playoff for the final qualifying spot.

So technically?

Didn’t get it done.

But I walked away from this one feeling pretty good about where things are headed.

I had very little practice time leading into the event, but physically I felt great.

Drove it well.
My body held up.
Two doubles hurt…one mental mistake and one situation that didn’t exactly go my way.

That’s tournament golf.

But here’s what stood out to me:

A few years ago, going into a tournament underprepared probably would’ve affected my body AND my game.

This time, the golf wasn’t quite good enough.

The body was.

That’s progress.

Not every improvement immediately shows up as a lower score.

Sometimes you have to recognize the wins hiding underneath the result.

Then get back to work.

There are thousands of great golf exercises online.

That’s not the problem.

The problem is knowing:

Which ones do you need?
How much?
How often?
When do you progress them?
And when do you stop doing them?

Exercises are easy to find.

A plan is different.

Scotland is a pretty good test for a golfer’s body.

More golf. More walking. More days in a row.

So this was a pretty great text to get:

“A little worn out by the last day but the back still felt good.”

That’s the kind of progress I care about.

The goal isn’t to create a body that never gets tired.

It’s to build one that’s capable of handling the golf you want to play.

Because sometimes success isn’t shooting a career low or gaining 20 yards.

Sometimes it’s going on the golf trip you’ve been looking forward to, playing all the golf you want...

and having your body hold up.

That’s a win.

“I can still play through it.”

Golfers are really good at this.

Change the setup a little.

Shorten the backswing.

Swing at 80%.

Get through 18.

But eventually I want to know:

What are you changing just so you CAN play?

Being able to finish the round isn’t necessarily the same as being able to play normally.

And if you’re constantly negotiating with your body to keep playing, that’s probably worth paying attention to.

Golf usually gives you clues before something becomes a major problem.

Maybe a club doesn’t go quite as far.

Your swing gets shorter.

You start fading late in the round.

Or 18 holes takes more out of you than it used to.

One round?

Probably doesn’t mean much.

But when something becomes a pattern, it’s worth asking why.

Your golf is giving you information.

Pay attention to it.

Save this one and check back in with yourself a few months from now.

Your coach says you need more rotation.

They may be completely right.

The next question is:

Can your body give you more rotation?

That’s an important distinction.

My job isn’t to rebuild your golf swing or compete with your instructor.

It’s to figure out whether there’s something physically keeping you from doing what you and your coach are already trying to accomplish.

When the coach, golfer, and body are all working toward the same goal, things tend to get a lot easier.
