Unlike most of my peers, I had the honor of personally knowing my great grandparents, Allard Johnson and Mary Ratliff. They died when I was young but I can remember Papaw being larger than life at over 6ft tall, even after decades of mining coal had stopped his back. Mamaw was a tiny thing who was the best cook I ever knew.

They were married in 1928 and went on to have 5 daughters: Audrey, Christine, Ima, Betty (my grandmother) and Patty Sue.
