This or That: Child Therapist Edition

I had a bit of fun with the one and will be starting a series! While everyone may have different opinions, these are mine and work for me!

One of the biggest aspects I do in my children’s therapy practice is parent education and consultation. For many parents, this is how they see the most progress.

In this series, I am going to take the comments adults say to kids and help you to reframe them into something that is going to see the change you are seeking in their behavior.

Continue to follow along to see more or let me know what you want help reframing!

I have had an increase in new followers, so here is a re-introduction.

I’m Nicole, I am a therapist that works primarily with ages 5-12 years old. I do play therapy and mostly use Directive and Nondirective Play Therapy.

I started my career as a school social worker and then moved into private practice when we moved to Georgia.

I see my clients virtually and in person!

If you are looking for a therapist for your child in Georgia, I’m your girl!

Myth: mindfulness is a religious practice.

So, let’s talk about it. Mindfulness means being fully present in the moment. Or as I describe it, it’s being focused on where you feet are. We aren’t thinking about before or the future.

And some people are hesitant to use mindfulness because of religious or spiritual reasons. And mindfulness was not founded by a religious or spiritual person and actually plays a large part in DBT therapy.

There are so many reasons to be using mindfulness and I hope you follow ago to continue to see why and how it can be helpful!

Bibliotherapy Sunday: “Jonathan James and the What If Monster” by Michelle Nelson-Schmidt

As I continue the theme of worry books, I wanted to highlight one that I use with my younger kids who may not understand what a worry is. This book never uses the word worry but instead focuses on “what if” thoughts, which many of my littles understand.

This book also turned the negative what if thoughts, like “what if I fall?” Into positive thoughts like “what if I win?”

I often pair this with an activity where the kiddo identifies a what if thought they had, and we work together to turn it into a positive what if thought.

This book is ideal for your little one and you can find it on my Amazon Storefront!

One of my favorite events I have ever done is a Toddler Yoga Story Hour 🧘‍♀️😮‍💨

The combination of books, yoga poses, mindfulness games, and music creates a space for younger kids to move, giggle, and learn!

I am looking to start a yoga toddler hour in the Gainesville, GA area! If you are interested, contact me!

I have had this Lego table for 7 years and I finally took some time to redo it!

It was a labor of love, convincing to get help, and excitement over the end result!

I am so excited to get it into my office and use it with my kiddos 🥰

Things I do and don’t allow in my therapy space, part 2.

Again, some of these may be unpopular opinions but these are based on my experience.

Now, let me do some clarifying. If a kiddo is angry, turns off their camera but continues to talk or even text over the chat, I am fine with that. What I am not fine with is complete cut off of video, mic, and text because something unsafe could be happening and I would not know. And safety is my priority, and I explain that when this happens.

Also, inviting people into session is certainly allowed, but there needs to be a purpose. I find with kids that sometimes their cousin or friend is at the house and they want them to attend the session to play. This is distracting and breaking confidentiality so I don’t allow it. But if someone is present to have a neutral conversation or participate in a mediation, then that is more than welcome and normally planned.

Are any of these things you do or don’t allow in your therapy space?

I have had a few questions lately about what is normal behavior and not normal behavior for young kids who are grieving.

So here it is.

If you have questions about what your child is experiencing, reach out! I am happy to talk to you about what is considered normal and not!

Virtual play therapy. Again.

Play therapy, and therapy in general, is not a one size fits all. I cater my therapy sessions to the kiddo. And while I may come into a session with a goal or idea in mind, my kiddo may have something else and I will pivot.

That’s why directive and nondirective play therapy gives me such wiggle room to work with my kids.

I am still accepting new clients I. Georgia for virtual or in person therapy!
