How To Defend Against the Americana From Bottom Side Control

Getting caught in an Americana from bottom side control can put you in serious trouble, but there is a way to turn your opponent’s attack against them.

Professor Matthew Jones demonstrates a counter that starts by disrupting the Americana grip, controlling the opponent’s wrist, and securing the correct over grip. From there, clamp their elbow tightly to your chest, rotate your entire body, and use the position to turn their submission attempt into a submission of your own.

Pay close attention to the wrist grip and elbow control. Small details make a big difference with this technique.

Jiu Jitsu Training and Personal Hygiene

Good hygiene is an important part of being a great Jiu Jitsu training partner. In this video, Professor Matthew Jones shares four simple hygiene habits every practitioner should follow before stepping onto the mats: shower before class if you’ve been sweating at work, keep your fingernails and toenails trimmed to help prevent scratches, wash your gi after every training session instead of leaving it in a hot gym bag or car, and maintain fresh breath out of respect for your training partners.

Clean habits help create a safer, healthier, and more enjoyable training environment for everyone. Whether you’re new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or have been training for years, proper hygiene is just as important as good technique and mat etiquette.
