Knees That Craic

Carl Jung believed your life had two distinct chapters, and the pivot point came around age 40.

In his 1930 essay The Stages of Life, Jung mapped out what he called the "morning" and "afternoon" of existence. The first half, he argued, was all about conquest. You built careers, forged relationships, established your place in the world. These external achievements felt urgent and vital because they were meant to. But then something shifted.

Around midlife, Jung observed that the same ambitions that had driven you forward began to feel hollow. The ladder you'd been climbing suddenly seemed to lean against the wrong wall. That's when the real psychological work began, he believed. The afternoon of life wasn't about more of the same. It was about turning inward, wrestling with questions of meaning, discovering who you actually were beneath all the roles you'd been playing. Jung called this process individuation, and he saw it as the true psychological task of the second half of life.

What made Jung's insight dangerous was this: most people entered their afternoon carrying the same map they'd used in the morning. They kept chasing external validation long after it stopped nourishing them. The tragedy wasn't aging. It was refusing to change when life demanded it.

Fun Fact Friday 📻🏑 On Aug. 29, 1926, Galway v Kilkenny hurling match became Europe’s first full live radio broadcast of a field sport. Kilkenny v Galway games still going strong at Knees That Craic and maybe a couple of our players were listening to the original program, lol

Where did the high 5 come from???? 🙌

The modern high five is commonly credited to a 1977 Los Angeles Dodgers moment between Dusty Baker and Glenn Burke after Baker hit his 30th home run of the season. As Baker crossed home plate, rookie teammate Glenn Burke was waiting on deck with his hand thrust excitedly into the air. Baker slapped it spontaneously, creating the very first documented high five in sports.

The high five has become the universal sign for teamwork, celebration, and encouragement. Very few places capture that feeling better than a Knees That Craic hurling or Gaelic football tournament!

As summer comes to an end, it’s time for the experienced players to start looking forward to the next big tournament and plenty of high fives in Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, and Kilkenny 2027! 🏆
