It won’t prevent illegal fishing but it may deter some from trafficking.
Researchers have developed an AI system that analyzes 3D X-ray scans to detect shark fins, seahorses, and sea cucumbers with an overall accuracy of about 92%.
While AI won't replace frontline inspectors, it can help flag suspicious bags faster and more accurately, making it harder for trafficked marine wildlife to slip through airports and mail centers.
It's an encouraging example of how technology can support conservation and help protect vulnerable ocean species before they disappear from the wild.

🌺 A little magic reached the remote shores of Amanu atoll last month! 🏝️
Thanks to the incredible generosity of yacht donors (the sailing yacht Seahawk) and our wonderful partnership with YachtAid Global , we were thrilled to deliver to the island’s school:
📱 5 iPads
📽️ A video projector
📚 Locally published books — including « Le Petit Prince » by Saint-Exupéry, in Paumotu!
11 children, aged 6 to 11, share one classroom with one dedicated teacher. These resources will make a real difference to their learning journey in one of the most remote corners of French Polynesia. 💛
This delivery is part of our ongoing « Opération Turu », now in its 3rd year, which has already brought iPads, computers, printers and projectors to schools in Hao, Fakarava, Tiputa, Rangiroa, Makemo, Bora Bora and Moorea.
All of this is made possible through the generosity of the superyacht industry and yacht owners here in French Polynesia. We truly cannot thank them enough. 🙏
Every contribution counts. Every child matters. 🌏✨

🌎 Ocean Day
June invites us to reflect on the health and sustainability of our oceans, and on the actions we can take—both individually and collectively—to protect these vital ecosystems and the countless species that depend on them.
It is also a time to recognize the resilience of coastal communities, particularly those in remote regions whose lives, culture, and future are deeply connected to the sea. Ensuring these communities can thrive where home is requires long-term, sustainable solutions that strengthen both people and the environment.
In French Polynesia, initiatives such as Operation Turu are helping to improve quality of life, especially for children, by supporting communities and creating opportunities for a healthier and more sustainable future.
🌊 Protecting our oceans goes hand in hand with supporting the people who depend on them. Together, we can help build a future where both communities and marine ecosystems flourish.
