Happy birthday to Shonn Greene (8/21)!

He played sparingly in his first two seasons. He missed the entire 2007 season due to academics, so he enrolled at nearby Kirkwood Community College, worked for a furniture company, and improved his grades.

He returned for the 2008 season, where he had a breakout season in 2008. He finished the season with 1850 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns. He rushed for at least 100 yards in each of the 13 games. He won the Doak Walker Award given to the nation's outstanding collegiate running back (the first Iowa player to win the award), and was recognized as a unanimous first-team All-American by numerous organizations. He also was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, and was the MVP of the Outback Bowl.

After the season, he announced he would enter the 2009 NFL Draft. Greene was the only player that year to rush for over 100 yards in every game. He was drafted by the New York Jets in the third round (65th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft.

Happy birthday to Chris Gambol (9/14)!

He was on the football team from 1983 to 1986 and was a two-year letterman in 1985 to 1986. He was originally recruited to Iowa as a tight end after being noticed by head coach Hayden Fry at an Iowa Hawkeye summer camp in 1982, but eventually switched to offensive line.

He was also a four-year letterman for the track team, participating in the shot put and discus, and was the Big Ten Conference shot put champion during the 1987 outdoor track season.

He was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 3rd Round of the 1987 NFL Draft. He was placed on injured reserve the entire season. He played in one game for the Colts during the 1988 NFL season before being waived. He was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Chargers in 1988, and played in 11 games. He signed with the Detroit Lions in March 1989, but was released in September, but later re-signed in November. He appeared in six games during the 1989 season. He signed with the New England Patriots in April 1990, and played in all 16 games, starting 15 games.

Happy birthday to Brett Greenwood (9/14)!

He joined the team as a walk-on, and worked his way up to the starting lineup in his final 3 seasons. He was named to the Freshman All-Big Ten team and was Academic All-Big Ten in 2007. His interception at the goal line saved a 10-6 win over 18th-ranked Illinois and for the season he ranked 10th in the Big Ten in pass break-ups. He earned honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition as a sophomore in 2008, including 12 tackles in a home win over third-ranked Penn State. He earned second team All-Big Ten honors as both a junior and senior.

During his senior season in 2010, he was named team captain and led the Big Ten Conference in interceptions (5). He ended his career with 11 tackles and an interception in Iowa’s Insight Bowl victory. He was tied for sixth in career interceptions (12) and totaled 229 career tackles.

He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2011 season, but was released during preseason camp. While training back home after being released, he suddenly collapsed during a workout and suffered significant brain trauma.

He was the honorary captain during the September 19th, 2015 football game against the Pittsburgh Panthers, as he continues to recover from this traumatic injury. He led the Hawkeye football team out of the stadium tunnel, defying the odds that he would ever walk or talk again.

The Brett Greenwood Scholarship will help provide educational support for one student-athlete on a yearly basis while honoring a Hawkeye great. This annual scholarship will go to a deserving student-athlete who best exhibits his determination and strong will, and to help in this endeavor.

Happy birthday to Fred Russell (9/14)!

He rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2002 and 2003. He finished his career with 2,760 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns, and he averaged 5.4 yards per carry.

Happy birthday to Jim Trickey (9/13)!

He was an All-State player all three years in high school.

In 1912, he was selected as 2nd Team All-American at the tackle position, becoming Iowa's first All-American in football. He almost didn't play that season, but a student petition encouraged him to return for his senior year instead of focusing on his studies full-time. He was also unanimously elected as the president of the senior class.

He passed away at an early age from Peritonitis.

His nephew was Ben Trickey.

Happy birthday to Chris Campbell (9/9)!

He was a three-time All-American and a two-time NCAA champion, winning national championship titles in 1976 & 1977. His career record of 122-6-3 ranks sixth on Iowa's all-time career winning percentage list.

He was a bronze medalist in Freestyle wrestling at the 1992 Olympics, becoming the oldest United States wrestler to medal at the Olympic Games (almost 38 years old). He won a gold medal at the 1981 World Wrestling Championships, and a Silver medal at the 1990 World Wrestling Championships.

Happy birthday to George 'Dusty' Rice (9/15)!

He had a breakout performance in 1951 against Purdue with 3 touchdowns. He returned the opening kickoff 102 yards, caught a 55-yard touchdown pass, and ran 69 yards for a touchdown. He earned the AP award for "Back of the Week."

After Iowa, he was drafted by the New York Giants in the 16th Round of the 1954 NFL Draft.

Happy birthday to Bob Stoops (9/9)!

He redshirted his freshman season in 1978, and suffered blowout losses, and he considered not coming back to Iowa for the next season, but stuck with it under new head coach Hayden Fry.

He was a four-year starter, and was a first team All-Big Ten selection at defensive back in 1982, despite his smaller frame. He was named Iowa's Team MVP and team captain in 1982. He made 230 tackles with 8 interceptions in his career. He helped lead the program to winning ways, including the 1981 Big Ten championship.

He had even greater success as a coach. After working as a grad assistant at Iowa, he held various coordinator and coaching positions at Kansas State and Florida before being named Head Coach at Oklahoma. At the same time, Kirk Ferentz was named Head Coach at Iowa, and many fans were hoping that he would be the Iowa coach (he had interviewed for the job).

During the 2000 season, he led the Sooners to an Orange Bowl victory and a national championship. He was awarded the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award in 2000 and the Walter Camp Coach of the Year Award in 2000 and 2003. He spent 18 years coaching at Oklahoma, winning a school-record 190 games, including the 2000 national championship. The Sooners finished in the "Top 10" 11 times.

Happy birthday to J.R. Koch (9/10)!

He ranked 5th in career blocked shots with 92. He averaged 10.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game as a senior in 1999, helping the Hawks reach the Sweet Sixteen. He helped the Hawkeyes to 3 NCAA Tournaments during his career, scoring 891 points and grabbing 449 rebounds over 4 seasons.

He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1999 NBA draft (46th overall) by the New York Knicks, and played professionally in the U.S. and Europe for 7 seasons.

His son Cooper is a current member of the Hawks MBB program

Happy birthday to Terry Lyon (9/9)!

He lettered his junior season (1962-63), playing in 18 games, and scoring 69 points. As a senior, he scored 55 points and grabbed 40 rebounds. He played in 31 games and averaged 4 points per game in his Iowa career.
