Lessons with Tags - Putting Basics

Everyone is trying to get the ball in the hole faster and given that we spend about half the time on or around the green when we play, it’s about time to discuss some putting basics.

There are two factors that determine whether the ball will go in the hole - speed and line. Is the ball traveling along the right line to go in? Does it have enough speed to get there? You might have the right line but the wrong speed and visa versa.

That said, there are a couple things I work on to hit better putts.

Face Angle
Path
Eye Line

If your face isn’t lined up to your target, the ball can’t go in.

If your path doesn’t go down your target line, your putt can’t go in.

Everything works together.

Set up two alignment sticks right in front of the hole. Pick a straight out.

Put the ball in between the sticks and set up. You’ve now created a path for the club to travel on. Also, with your face perpendicular to the sticks, you’re now working on face angle. Finally, drop a ball from the bridge of your nose down to the ground. The ball should drop slightly inside the golf ball.

The drill outlined here allows you to work in face, path, and eyeline. Additionally, you are also by default working on hitting the ball in the center of the face which helps with consistent speed. Finally you can move the sticks further from the hole to work on speed control.

Most amateurs don’t give themselves enough time to hit balls or warm up before they play golf - then wonder why it takes 4-5 holes to start playing better. While I’d prefer you hit some balls there are other ways to get loose that will make a big difference.

About a week ago, I put the TA25 Swing Trainer from 13 Under Golf in the bag and I couldn’t be happier.

The TA25 has a molded grip (which you know I love), a flexible shaft to help with tempo, and three different weights. I like to start with the lightest weight and work my way up before I hit balls. It’s been a game changer in helping my body get loose.

If you’re looking for a training aid than can help you work on your grip, tempo, clubhead speed, and getting loose before practice or teeing it up, give the TA25 a shot.

Lessons with Tags - Pre-shot Routine

Do you have a consistent routine before you hit each shot? If not, you’re wasting shots.

A repeatable pre-shot routine will help you lock in before every shot. It should take place behind the golf ball and take 5-15 seconds. Pick your target and visualize what you’re trying to do.

Once you’re ready, approach the golf ball and execute.

All of your thinking and planning should take place behind the golf ball. Once you approach the golf ball, it’s go time.

Work on your pre-shot routine next time you’re on the range and start to put it in place on the course.

After a couple weeks away at the Evans Scholars Invitational, we are back. We had an awesome week The Glen Club for the championship. Our champion was a guy you need to have on your radar - Tommy Morrison - this kid is a stud. Only four starts on the Korn Ferry Tour and he has yet to finish outside of the top 10.

I’ll have a tournament recap later this week as we get back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Thank you for your continued support as we have surpassed 350 followers. I appreciate you all so much!

Let’s have a week!

60 Second Lessons with Tags - Episode 2

Jake is looking for some consistency in his very young golf career. I think cleaning up the grip is going to help him do that. The left hand is awfully strong and dominating the back swing. Getting the grip in a more neutral position will help with consistency. Additionally I’d like to see the elbows stay closer together on the back swing - more connected.

DM your swing if you want to be the next 60 second lesson!

Lessons with Tags - Pitching Basics

As a follow up to our lesson yesterday on chipping, I want to introduce you to the pitch shot. A chip shot is a low show and a pitch shot is one we are trying to hit up into the air. Think flop shot. This shot is great when you need to hit over something like a bunker.

We said with chipping, we didn’t want the club head to pass the hands. With pitching we do, the club should hinge on the way up and release on the way down. This allows the club to launch the ball in the air.

Pitch Shot Check List
- Ball in the middle of your feet
- Take a normal set up with your feet just inside shoulder width
-Thinking about the hands of a clock with 9:00 on your right side and 3:00 being on your left - take your hands back to 9:00 and through to 3:00.
The club should hinge up where your arm and club form an “L” at 9:00 and on the way through the club should pass the hands and form a reverse “L” at 3:00.
-Try taking swing from 8:00-4:00 and from 10:00-2:00 to with all of your wedges. This will provide you with an ability to cover quite a bit of yardage inside 75-100 yards

This shot is so versatile. It is going to help you hit less shots from inside 100 yards. I promise!

Lessons with Tags - Chipping Basics

Chipping, or bump and run, is a very simple shot that when perfected can help you save many shots during your round. I think of it like putting with a lofted club.

Chip shots spend very little time in the air before rolling toward the hole.

Chip Shot Check List
- Ball in the middle of your feet
- Feet close together and toes pointed ahead of ball
- Stance is closer to the ball than normal
- Weight should be 60-70% on your front foot
- Hands should be ahead of the ball at set up
- On the takeaway, hands go back to the outside of your right thigh
- The downswing should go through to your left thigh
- Hands stay in front of club head the entire time - club should never pass the hands

Practice this shots with multiple clubs. The longer the club the more it will roll. Don’t change the swing - change the club to hit it different distances.

As you get better with this shot, I guarantee you’ll start to save strokes around the greens.
