Black Breastfeeding Week is here, and the theme is "We All We Got." 🖤

This week celebrates Black mothers, Black babies, and Black communities navigating breastfeeding while facing systemic racism in healthcare, implicit bias from providers and health inequities.

Black maternal mortality is a crisis. Black infant mortality rates are unacceptably high. And Black breastfeeding rates are lower—not because Black mothers
don't want to breastfeed, but because the systems meant to support them are broken.

Black Breastfeeding Week lifts up the resilience, power and expertise of Black breastfeeding parents. It celebrates Black lactation consultants, midwives, doulas, and birth workers. It acknowledges the wisdom passed down through generations. And it demands better: better access to care, better provider training on cultural humility and implicit bias, better representation in lactation and maternal health spaces and better outcomes for Black babies and families ✨✨

Let's talk about mastitis because if you're breastfeeding, you need to know what this is and how to handle it!

🤱 Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue, usually caused by a clogged
milk duct, incomplete emptying, or a bacterial infection.

🤱 It can come on suddenly and feel AWFU. Breast pain, redness, swelling, warmth, flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, body aches), and exhaustion are symptoms.

🤱 Mastitis can be caused by missed feedings, poor latch, stress, dehydration,
or just bad luck. Sometimes it's your body's way of saying "hey, I need help here!!!"

✅ Home treatment tips that help:
-Apply heat before feeding (warm compress, hot shower) to help milk flow.
-Apply cold after feeding to reduce swelling (ice pack wrapped in cloth).
-Massage gently while feeding, working toward the clogged area.
-Feed frequently from the affected breast—your baby's sucking is the most effective way to clear a duct.
-Stay hydrated and rest as much as possible.
- Ibuprofen can help with pain and inflammation.
- Hand express if needed to relieve pressure.
- Wear supportive (not tight) bras.

🚨 When to see a doctor:
- If you have a fever over 101°F
- Symptoms don't improve in 24 hours
- You see pus or blood in your milk
- You suspect a breast abscess.

IMPORTANT: Mastitis can turn serious quickly, so DO NOT ignore it or try to tough it out!!! When in doubt, call a lactation counselor or your doctor!

This week is World Breastfeeding Week, and the global theme is "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works." 🌍

That means we're not just talking about the benefits of breastfeeding (though there are many!!), we're talking about the systems, policies, and support that need to exist for breastfeeding to actually work for families.

We're talking about paid parental leave so parents aren't forced back to work before their milk supply is established.
We're talking about workplace accommodations and clean, private pumping spaces. We're talking about healthcare providers who listen, lactation consultants who are accessible and affordable, and communities that normalize nursing in public without harassment.
We're talking about partners, grandparents, friends, and employers who actively support breastfeeding parents instead of making it harder.

"Strengthen what works" means examining what's already working in your family's breastfeeding journey and building on that foundation. And it means getting the right support at the right time 🫶
