🐴 What are we looking for when treading a horse?
It’s more than just walking through water. We’re watching for balance, mobility, flexion, and strength.
One thing that makes the aqua treadmill unique is the view it gives us of the horse’s movement. From above and behind, we can watch the topline and body work in a way we don’t normally get to see under saddle or from the ground.
We’re looking at things like:
💧 Topline movement — Does the horse move evenly through both sides of the body, or does one side appear stiffer?
💧 Stride & mobility — With the added resistance of the water, does each limb pull through evenly? Is one stride noticeably shorter or weaker than the other?
💧 Strength & balance — As the water level increases, the horse has to engage the core and work harder to stay straight and centered on the treadmill. This is often where weaknesses become the easiest to spot.
These little details help us better understand how the whole horse is moving, not just how many minutes they spend on the tread.
Because the goal isn’t simply movement — it’s balanced, controlled, quality movement. 💙
