Amelia Newcomb's Equine Services works to develop a trusting and confident relationship between horse and rider. Using theories from both natural horsemanship and classical dressage, Amelia creates a holistic approach to training that adapts to fit the needs of each individual horse and rider. Her approach incorporates all pieces of horsemanship from basic groundwork and ground manners to advanced dressage movements. The emphasis is always on the foundation with the basic trust, understanding, and relaxation for both horse and rider as the building blocks to harmony and progress. After starting over 100 horses, Amelia has developed a step by step method that gently and methodically introduces the young horse to accept and carry a rider. She believes that the first couple months under saddle are the MOST important in any horses' long career. It is essential that the initial training is done correctly and carefully to ensure that each horse develops confidence in themselves and trust in the rider.

๐Ÿดโœจ The trot lengthening is a movement that first shows up at First Level. The trot lengthening is a test of "thrust" โ€“ the horse's ability to push from the hind leg, through their back, and into longer, more suspended strides.

According to the U.S. Dressage Federation's Glossary of Judging Terms, lengthening is defined as "Elongation of the stride and the outline of the horse, yet maintaining the same tempo (beats per minute) and balance as in the corresponding working pace." ๐Ÿ“‹

Are you having trouble getting your horse to actually lengthen the trot strides? ๐Ÿค” Most all horses tend to rush and get quicker in the trot instead of actually lengthening the stride! โš ๏ธ

Here are some exercises to try: ๐ŸŽฏ

1๏ธโƒฃ Go up the quarterline, leg-yield over to the rail, then lengthen the trot down the long side. The leg yield is an exercise for lateral suppleness that helps loosen the horse's back so that they CAN actually find a longer stride. ๐Ÿ’ช

2๏ธโƒฃ Ride the lengthening on a 20m circle โ€“ using a curved line for the lengthening helps to keep the horse from getting strong and braced in the topline. ๐Ÿ”ต It is important to keep the horse round and supple in the neck and back in order to actually get a longer trot stride. โœจ

Hereโ€™s something that might surprise you about flying changes. ๐Ÿดโœจ

Theyโ€™re not as complicated as you think โ€” when your foundation is right.

The reason most riders struggle isnโ€™t because theyโ€™re bad riders or have the wrong horse. Itโ€™s because nobody showed them the steps that come BEFORE the flying change. ๐Ÿ’ก

Before you ask for a flying change, your horse needs:

๐Ÿ”น Perfect trot-canter-trot transitions on the aids
๐Ÿ”น Counter canter
๐Ÿ”น Leg yield in the canter
๐Ÿ”น Simple changes

Once those pieces are solid? The flying changes start to happen almost naturally. ๐Ÿ’ช

Any horse can learn to do a clean, correct flying change โ€” you just need the right roadmap to get there. ๐ŸŒŸ

That's why Iโ€™ve created a FREE Flying Changes Checklist to walk you through each prerequisite step by step โ€” so you know exactly what to work on and when youโ€™re truly ready to start the changes. ๐Ÿ“š

๐ŸŽ‰ Welcome back to Setbacks & Solutions with Mik!

For this episode, we took a little road trip down to Wellington, where I had the opportunity to train with an Olympian for two days. ๐Ÿ… And I definitely got my butt kicked a little bit on my rider position! ๐Ÿ˜„

Mik has such a big, powerful way of moving that sometimes I find myself bracing, over-arching my back, or following the wrong part of the canter stride. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ So this lesson was as much about improving ME as it was about improving Mik. ๐Ÿ’ช We worked on my seat, core, half-halts, and learning how to stay balanced and effective without holding him together.

So in this episode, we're diving into: ๐ŸŽฏ

๐Ÿช‘ Fixing my rider position
How adjusting my pelvis, core, and seat helped me stay with Mik's big movement instead of bracing against it.

๐Ÿค— "Hug, give" in the canter
A simple reminder that helped me improve the timing of my half-halts without pulling backward.

๐Ÿด Self-carriage in lateral work
Why I don't want to constantly push with my leg or hold with my hand through leg yield, shoulder-in, and half-pass.

โœจ More rideable pirouettes
Mik is getting stronger and sitting more, but the goal is still to keep him relaxed and adjustable instead of holding him through the movement.

๐Ÿ”„ Finding balance in the tempis
Our changes are still a little crooked and wild, so I'm focusing on giving Mik enough time between each change to find his balance again.

๐Ÿงฉ Training smarter, not harder
When Mik became strong and unbalanced after the tempis, I used a 10-meter circle to reorganize him rather than simply adding more pressure.

๐Ÿ’ช Adding expression and power
Once the balance and connection were there, I could ask for more expression in the trot and even bring Mik back for some little half-steps.

One thing I really took away from these lessons was how valuable it is to have someone challenge the way you ride. ๐ŸŒŸ Even as a Grand Prix rider and trainer, I still have habits in my position that can make things harder for Mik, especially with how big he moves. ๐ŸŽ

Sometimes the answer isn't another exercise for the horse. It's changing something in yourself. ๐Ÿ’ก I love lessons that give me something very specific to take home and keep working on. There's always another layer to improve, and that's one of my favorite things about Dressage. ๐Ÿ’›

Struggling with the canter seat? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿด

Hereโ€™s a tip that completely changes the way riders understand it: think circles and ovals. โœจ

The canter is a three-beat gait that creates a rocking horse motion in your horseโ€™s back. To follow that motion, your hips need to move in a continuous circle โ€” stop moving, and your horse will likely break to trot! ๐Ÿ›‘

Once youโ€™ve got that, you can actually adjust the canter from your seat:

๐Ÿ”น For a lengthening or medium canter โ€” think of growing that circle into a horizontal oval. Press the base longer across the saddle, and your horse takes longer, more ground-covering steps.

๐Ÿ”น For a collected canter โ€” think of a vertical oval. Shorter base, but more jump and lift in the strides.

The key is to never stop moving your hips. ๐Ÿ’ช Whether youโ€™re riding a circle, a half-pass, or anywhere in between โ€” keep moving your seat with your horse.

Want to develop a truly balanced, independent seat that lets you use tools like this effectively? ๐ŸŒŸ Join me for my FREE Independent Seat Webinar!

Reality Check: Most flying change problems aren't flying change problems. They're canter problems. ๐ŸดTell me in the comments what your flying change woes are, and I'll see if I can help!

09/20/2026

The biggest reason your flying changes arenโ€™t working? ๐Ÿ˜”๐Ÿด

Youโ€™re starting with the flying change itself โ€” before youโ€™ve built the foundation underneath it. ๐Ÿ›‘

Hereโ€™s what most riders donโ€™t realize: the flying change aid is actually the same as a canter aid. The difference is that you have to apply it in midair, at exactly the right moment. โœจ

Which means if the basics arenโ€™t perfect, the change simply wonโ€™t happen cleanly.

Before you ask for a flying change, your horse needs to be able to:

๐Ÿ”น Trot-canter-trot transitions
๐Ÿ”น Counter canter
๐Ÿ”น Leg yield in the canter
๐Ÿ”น Simple changes
๐Ÿ”น Adjustability in the canter

When those foundations are solid, the flying change becomes so much more achievable. ๐Ÿ’ช

And the good news? Every horse CAN learn to do clean, correct flying changes โ€” when you have the right foundation and the right exercises. ๐ŸŒŸ

Iโ€™ve created a FREE Flying Changes Checklist to help you work through every prerequisite step by step โ€” including a worksheet to track your progress. ๐Ÿ“š

I just got back from a fun weekend competing at the World Equestrian Center. ๐Ÿดโœจ Mik made his Fourth Level debut, and Future competed at Third Level.

And on the drive home, I was thinkingโ€ฆ why do I show? ๐Ÿค”

Because honestly, there are a LOT of reasons not to. It's expensive. It takes time. Things don't always go according to plan. It's hot. Your horse isn't "fancy enough."

But for me, showing gives me milestones. It gives me something to work toward. It helps me measure our progress. It gives purpose and structure to my training. ๐Ÿ’ช

But here's the important part:

The show is the goal. It isn't the dream. ๐Ÿ’›

Goals are the external things we pursue โ€” a certain score, a blue ribbon, moving up a level, getting your flying changes.

But the dream is how you want to experience the journey.

When I got Mik about 18 months ago, he hated working. He would run backwards and refuse to go into the arena. He was unhappy mentally and physically. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

Now? He confidently walks into the arena โ€” even at shows. His flying changes are confirmed. His body is stronger and more balanced. ๐ŸŒŸ

But do you know what I'm most proud of? I LOVE riding him. โค๏ธ

Fourth Level is the goal. The partnership we're building every single day is the dream.

And I don't want to wait until I reach Grand Prix to enjoy that dream. I want to live it now. โœจ

Sometimes as riders we accidentally postpone the dream.

"I'll be confident whenโ€ฆ"
"I'll enjoy riding when my horse canโ€ฆ"
"I'll feel like a good rider when I finallyโ€ฆ"

But what if you could pursue your goals while living the dream right now? ๐Ÿ’›

You don't need a blue ribbon to feel connected to your horse. To feel courageous. To understand each other. To finish a ride knowing you helped your horse become a little stronger, happier, and more confident.

The dream isn't waiting for you at the finish line. The dream is the relationship you're building with your horse along the way. โค๏ธ

Flying changes โ€” the milestone every rider dreams of. ๐Ÿดโœจ

But all too often, riders aim across the diagonal, swap their legsโ€ฆ and nothing happens. Or worse โ€” way too much of the wrong thing happens. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

Hereโ€™s the truth: just changing your legs rarely works. Flying changes happen in a split second, and if the basics arenโ€™t in place โ€” engagement, balance, adjustability โ€” the change simply wonโ€™t happen cleanly.

There are five prerequisite movements your horse needs to understand before you ever ask for a flying change. ๐Ÿ’ช

Do you know what they are? ๐Ÿค”

1๏ธโƒฃ Trot-Canter-Trot Transitions
2๏ธโƒฃ Counter Canter
3๏ธโƒฃ The Rubber Band Exercise
4๏ธโƒฃ Leg-Yield Hopscotch
5๏ธโƒฃ Simple Changes

Every horse CAN learn the flying changes โ€” you just need to follow the right steps. ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿดโœจ Do you know whether you're holding your reins correctly? Most riders don't, and that's more common than you'd think.

In this video, my husband Germรกn steps into the role of the horse so we can walk you through exactly what proper rein contact should feel like, from the ground up. ๐ŸŽฏ We begin with your position in the saddle, then refine the precise placement of your hands and fingers. The concept is straightforward, but I promise you, once it clicks, you'll notice the difference the very next time you're in the saddle.

Here's the insight most riders overlook: correcting your reins begins with correcting your alignment and seat, not your grip. โš ๏ธ

I teach this as rider position stance, which is the alignment of your ear, shoulder, hip, and heel, paired with a softly bent elbow and an engaged core. ๐Ÿ’ช This isn't a minor detail. It's the framework everything else depends on.

To demonstrate why, Germรกn pulled on me the way a horse leans into contact. ๐ŸŽ When my core relaxed and I let myself tip forward, even slightly, I had no ability to hold my ground. But the instant I sank my weight into my heels and re-engaged my core, I could absorb considerably more pressure while staying balanced and secure.

๐ŸŒŸ This is the lesson I want you to carry with you: strong, effective rein contact isn't built with your hands. It's built with your foundation. Get that right, and everything else becomes far easier.

Once your position is solid, we can turn our attention to your hands. โœจ

The rein passes between your pinky and ring finger, traveling up through your palm. Your thumb presses down against the rein and your index finger, creating a small "rooftop" shape. ๐Ÿ  This is what keeps the rein secure and prevents it from slipping through your fingers.

Your ring finger carries a particularly important responsibility here. ๐Ÿ’ก Think of it as your shock absorber, the finger responsible for the subtle suppling and softening that keeps your contact quiet and responsive. A few habits tend to work against riders in this area: gripping the rein in a tight fist, allowing the thumbs to point upward, or letting the rein slide loosely through the hand. โš ๏ธ If any of these sound familiar, consider it an invitation to reset and refine... ๐Ÿ‘‰ Comment "reins" below, and I will send you the link to read all my tips and watch the video!
