For a very long time, running was a source of shame and punishment. Shame because, despite being a standout athlete from a young age and eventual professional baseball player, I never once passed the mile run test in gym class as a kid. Punishment because my baseball coaches used running as literal punishment.
… but we can always rewrite the script. Running eventually became a major life growth tool for me, first in using sprints to make small improvements (literally 0.1mph at a time on the treadmill), then working progressively longer distances to support my friend (chosen family) Keith in his running goals, and ultimately to my one and only marathon (Honolulu for my 30th birthday).
These days I enjoy running circumstantially, as in, with a shared goal with a friend, or when on vacation somewhere scenic. However, since I run much less frequently, and I’m a big guy (6’1 225lbs), I make sure to be mindful of my pre and post-run activations and stretches, as the impact of running takes a toll on the body! Scroll through the carousel to see what I do and why- these are especially excellent for heavyweight runners, but ultimately great for all!
Running has turned into a source of joy, and I’d like to keep it that way, so I take mindful action before, during, and after running. I hope that these are useful for you- bookmark and use them whenever!
Sending you good vibes! 💪🏽🏃🏽♂️✨
