Today’s Warmwater Fly-Fishing Workshop was all about turning knowledge into time on the water.

Participants worked through the fundamentals of warmwater fly fishing, including fly selection, rigging, reading the water, presentation, and fishing techniques, before heading to the ponds to put those skills into practice. And the fish cooperated!

One of the best parts of these workshops is watching the progression from learning a new concept in the classroom to making the cast, working the fly, feeling the strike, and eventually holding up a fish with a big smile.

Warmwater species provide some of the most accessible and exciting opportunities for fly anglers, and you don’t have to travel to a mountain trout stream to enjoy great fly fishing. Sometimes a productive fishery is much closer to home.

A great evening of learning, fishing, and building confident anglers.

☔️😎🎣 The rain couldn’t hold back these 6 new fly-casters from learning the Joann Wulff method!

We held a Basic fly-casting workshop at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center this evening and couldn’t have been more pleased with the group that eagerly came to learn 👩‍🎓 👨‍🎓.

They learned the, tried and true, roll cast and the, what some might call fancy, basic cast 🤩.

Volunteers Sharon, Mike, and Robert were extremely happy to see the progress they made from the beginning of the class to the end, the participants couldn’t have done it without their support and helpful tips 👏.

We can’t wait to see them again and how they progressed 👨‍🏫👩‍🏫.

Last night’s Fly-Tying Forum took on a theme that was a little unconventional: Trash Flies.

Participants learned to tie two patterns that may not win many beauty contests but have earned a reputation for catching fish—the Mop Fly and the Blob Fly.

But the evening went beyond simply learning the tying steps. We also explored the origins of each pattern, the materials that make them unique, why they can be so effective, and different techniques for fishing them.

Because learning to tie a fly is only part of the equation. Understanding why it works, how it behaves in the water, and when and how to fish it is what turns a fly tyer into a more knowledgeable angler.

Fly-tying with Intrepid Spirit was a blast with these new fly-tyers this afternoon! 🥳

We had so many people eager to tie flies at the beginning and leaving feeling accomplished seeing what they can do with a bare hook and some random materials at the end. 🪲🪡🧵

🤩 It was absolutely PERFECT weather for a Family Fishing Workshop at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center.

Every family who came out took full advantage of the cool weather and overcast we had that made the fish bite extremely well 🎣

The thunderstorms kept us inside, but it couldn’t keep the dedicated anglers away from learning about how to catfish in our Catfishing Basics workshop at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center 💪🎣!

We had participants in a wide range of ages attend our workshop and learn how to target these potentially massive fish 🙌.

Introductory Fishing for Adults is always a great time. Learning new skills or catching your first fish, the smiles are always worth the time.
