โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿด IS IT TOO HOT TO RIDE? DO THE MATH FIRST!

Just because your horse is willing to work in the heat doesnโ€™t mean itโ€™s safe.

One of the easiest ways to estimate how efficiently your horse can cool himself is to add the actual air temperature (ยฐF) + relative humidity (%).

๐ŸŒก๏ธ TEMPERATURE + HUMIDITY = YOUR NUMBER

Hereโ€™s a quick guide:

Temp + Humidity What It Means

Under 130 ๐ŸŸข Lower risk โ€” horses can cool themselves relatively efficiently

130โ€“150 ๐ŸŸก Use caution โ€” cooling ability is decreased

Over 150 ๐Ÿ”ด High risk โ€” cooling ability is greatly reduced; avoid riding when possible

Over 180 ๐Ÿšจ DANGEROUS โ€” conditions can become life-threatening with exertion

โ˜€๏ธ HERE'S AN EXAMPLE:
Itโ€™s 100ยฐF outside with 58% relative humidity.
100 + 58 = 158
๐Ÿ”ด That puts your horse OVER 150.

Even though 58% humidity may not sound terrible, when combined with a 100ยฐF air temperature, your horse has a much harder time getting rid of the heat produced during exercise.

DON'T FORGET THE INDIVIDUAL HORSE

These numbers are a guideline, not a guarantee of safety.
Older horses, overweight horses, horses that aren't conditioned to the heat, horses with long hair coats, and especially horses with anhidrosis can develop heat stress much sooner.

When temperatures are extreme, consider riding early in the morning, shortening your workout, decreasing the intensity, taking frequent breaks and providing plenty of water.

Sometimes the safest training decision you can make is simply:
It's too hot. We'll ride another day.

Training Tip of the day:

END ON A GOOD NOTE

When youโ€™re doing session sons and you just got the best stop in the world. Stop. When your horse found a new gear between first and second for the first time. Stop. When your horse finally set the right pocket and turned on a dime. Stop. Because that horse is gonna remember that good thing and that they were praised for it. Itโ€™ll make the rides after go smooth.
When your trainer seen a 1% improvement in your horse during the session. Stop. Let it sit in their brain and remember that it was good. Even if itโ€™s the very first run of your session and you only rode for 15 minutes. That one good note you just left on can make the world of difference ๐Ÿ™Œ
I promise itโ€™s okay to not have a full training session, itโ€™s okay if it took an hour to get to that good note, and itโ€™s okay if itโ€™s only 1% better than yesterday๐Ÿ’™
