Today, we recognize the histories, cultures, traditions, and enduring contributions of Native American peoples across our country.
For those of us who love horses, this day also offers an opportunity to learn more about the remarkable place horses have held within many Native communities.
Following the horse’s return to North America, numerous Indigenous nations developed extraordinary traditions of horsemanship. Horses transformed travel, hunting, trade, warfare, and daily life for many Plains peoples, while becoming deeply woven into the cultural traditions and identities of individual nations.
Here in Texas and across the Great Plains, the history of the horse cannot be separated from the history of Native peoples. Nations including the Comanche became renowned for exceptional horsemanship, developing skills and knowledge that remain an important part of the broader story of horses in America.
At Texas Equine, we believe equine education should include more than learning how to ride or care for a horse. It should also encourage us to understand the people, cultures, and histories that have shaped our relationship with these incredible animals.
Today, we honor Native American communities — past and present — and encourage everyone to keep learning about the many distinct nations, traditions, languages, and histories that are an essential part of the American story.
