Moby Grape Racing Moby Grape Racing is a successful outboard hydroplane racing team based out of Washington state. New for 2015 is co-owner Brandi Alejo.

Team driver Mike Perman started racing at 11 years old and has 17 years of racing experience. Mike is a Hall of Champions inductee with multiple national championships and world records to his credit. Crew chief Tony Perman has provided the top notch equipment over the years to make those achievements possible. Debi Perman has been the one behind the scenes over the years making sure everything runs smoothly. Brandi and her family have been a huge help and support over the years.They also represent the future of MGR with Alex Alejo.

Video of one of two absolutely EPIC duels with Kyle Bahl this weekend! He’s faster than me no doubt, but I was able to get one over on him in one of the 4 heats this weekend.

This last weekend really just solidified the fact that I have to tip my cap to Gleason racing and Sutter’s Gold racing in both C stock classes because they are really rolling. But CSR in particular is shaping up to be a tightly fought battle in region 10 this year with Trey and Johnny included in the mix.

Our first race of the year was last weekend and it was a good one overall. Alex really started the year looking like he’s ready to be a strong competitor in his classes. He picked up a pair of 3rd place finishes on Saturday, and looked even stronger on Sunday. Though the Sunday results don’t necessarily reflect that due to a couple of small mistakes that I’m sure he’ll grow from.

For those who don’t know already, Alex and I are sharing boats this year with me running CSH and CSR, and Alex running the restrictor classes of 20ssH and 25ssR.

I personally had more of an up and down weekend where I was left feeling frustrated. In CSH I failed to make a good start all weekend, which is tough because I expect better than that out of myself. In CSR the new boat is further off the pace than I would hope. Picked up a 4th on Saturday after jumping the gun, and was well off the pace of JMK and Kyle Bahl, with a 2nd on Sunday when JMK sat the day out. I know that there’s no shame in losing to those two, and that if I can get to the point where I’m keeping up with those guys that I can hang with the best in the country. But it was still very deflating to get passed on the outside by both of them in one heat.

Alex and I learned a lot driving the new boat, and both of our confidence was much higher on Sunday. I look forward to that process continuing. As a crew chief, we are learning about the boat setup and getting better every time out.

The only pictures I took from the weekend are the first two. Otherwise credit and gratitude goes to Jason Diamond for the pit picture, and Christine Gleason/ Gleason Photography for all of the racing photos.

All dressed up with nowhere to go.

I hit something in the water and broke the new boat first time out testing a few weeks back. All the work has been put in to repair it, and the forecast looks pretty good for this weekend.

BUT it’s been raining all week, and the creeks in the area are flooding. That’s after wind and snow came through and put a lot of tree limbs and debris down. So unfortunately discretion has to win out. I think there’s just going to be too much debris and crap in the water this weekend, and it’s not worth the risk of tearing stuff up. I especially don’t want to hurt the new boat twice in a row. C’est la vie.

I’ve got the exciting new runabout in the shop. But before getting to work on it, the hydro needed a little love.

Last season one of the straps in the trailer wasn’t holding the boat in place well and the wings got some damage. But they’re all patched up now and you wouldn’t notice any repair was made unless you’re looking for it.
