I've had several people ask me throughout the past few years why I chose to oil treat my calls and not use a hard CA type finish to better protect the wood. Today was a quick unexpected reminder why...
Had the afternoon off work, so I decided to clean the shop up a bit. That's when I noticed my lanyard hanging up behind the bench. Call me cheesy, but I still hunt with the first goose call I ever made. It was beat up, covered in dirt, grease, and saw dust. Between the filth was a sun bleached finish that was hardly anything to look at. Not to mention I had made it before I designed my logo, so the band was a simple aluminum place holder.
I was able to pull everything apart, Chuck it up on the lathe and start wet sanding with a new oil finish, and put a shiny new Bridgewater band on. A mere 30 minutes of work and this baby is back in business. The dirt and faded finish are replaced with the rich tone of cherry, with all the little bumps and bruises left behind as a way to memorialize the memories I've created hunting with this call over the last several years. The patina that the wood develops from being used in the elements will always earn this call a spot on my lanyard. After all, there is no better finish than time 👌
