Today, the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department joins our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001.
Twenty-five years ago, 2,977 innocent lives were taken in the attacks on our nation. Among them were 343 firefighters, 72 police officers, and 8 emergency medical personnel who answered the call and ran toward danger while thousands of others were trying to escape it.
They climbed stairwells carrying heavy equipment, helped strangers find their way to safety, treated the injured, maintained order in chaos, and continued forward knowing the risks they faced.
Many never came home.
For those of us who serve our communities today, September 11 is more than a date in history. It is a reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness that define the fire service and all who answer the call to help others.
Today, we remember every innocent life lost. We honor the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, dispatchers, and countless ordinary Americans who demonstrated extraordinary courage in the hours, days, and years that followed.
We also remember the survivors and the first responders who later lost their lives from illnesses related to their service at Ground Zero.
May we never forget their names.
May we never forget their sacrifice.
May we never forget how our nation
stood together.
