Long before there were instruments to measure neural activity, brain waves, or the effects of contemplative practice on the prefrontal cortex, the rishis were already mapping the mind.
Their instrument was the mind itself. Their methodology was direct observation, sustained over lifetimes of practice, refined through lineages of transmission that treated inner inquiry with the same rigor a scientist brings to any serious field of study. What they produced was not mythology or metaphor. It was a precise and systematic map of how the mind moves, what disturbs it, what settles it, and what lies beneath its fluctuations altogether.
Citta vritti nirodhah. Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind. Four words that contain an entire psychology, philosophy, and practice. The vrittis, the fluctuations, were never framed as the enemy. They are data. Information about the state of the citta, the impressional field through which we perceive and respond to everything.
What modern neuroscience is now measuring in controlled studies, the rishis described through direct experience thousands of years ago. The conversation between these two ways of knowing is one of the most alive and important conversations in contemporary yoga and yoga therapy.
This is what we mean when we say yoga is a science of the inside.
