When temperatures become extremely hot, horses need extra care to stay healthy and avoid heat stress. One of the most important things an owner can do is provide constant access to fresh, clean water. Horses can drink several gallons of water each day, and their water intake increases even more during hot weather. Water buckets and troughs should be cleaned regularly to prevent algae, dirt, and bacteria from contaminating the water. Horses should also have access to shade, whether from trees or a well-ventilated shelter, and strenuous exercise should be limited during the hottest parts of the day.
Electrolytes are another important part of caring for horses in extreme heat. When horses sweat, they lose essential minerals such as sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and magnesium. Replacing these electrolytes helps maintain proper hydration, muscle function, and overall health. Electrolyte supplements can be added to a horse’s feed or provided according to a veterinarian’s recommendations, but they should always be offered along with plenty of clean, fresh water. Horses should never be forced to consume electrolytes without having adequate water available, as this can increase the risk of dehydration. If your horse doesn't like electrolytes in their feed, there are several good alternatives. Replenimash is good for flavoring water, or using some alfalfa to make a tea. There are several pastes available to give orally. Soaking their feed is also a great way to ensure water consumption as well.
Horse owners should also watch closely for signs of heat stress or heat exhaustion. Warning signs include excessive sweating or a complete lack of sweating, rapid breathing, elevated heart rate, weakness, lethargy, and reluctance to move. If a horse shows these symptoms, it should be moved to a shaded area immediately and cooled with cool (not ice-cold) water while contacting a veterinarian if the condition does not improve quickly. By providing clean water, replacing lost electrolytes, offering shade, and monitoring horses carefully, owners can help keep their horses safe, comfortable, and healthy during periods of extreme heat.
