“So often in climbing, the moment I realize something is possible, I want to do it quickly — for the sake of efficiency, momentum, and maybe a little ego, too. But the experiences that stay with me rarely happen that way.

Some lines ask for more of your attention, and the Book of Hate is certainly one of them. More than just a problem to solve, this beautiful 40-meter stem corner became a place for me to slow down, settle in, and learn something about myself. Gradually, the route shifted from something I wanted to climb into something I just wanted to understand.

I spent a handful of days on it in April. Over time, the corner became more familiar — the texture of the granite, the subtle changes in angle, and the feeling of comfort that comes from returning to the same piece of rock with a little more understanding each time.

In the end, it wasn’t just the send that made it memorable. It was reaching a point where my movement became instinctive, the climbing felt effortless, and the route almost seemed to climb itself. It was the deepest state of flow I’ve ever experienced 🧘🏻‍♂️

This may be my hardest single-pitch route in Yosemite, but what I’ll remember most is what it felt like to know that corner intimately enough to move through it without thought or hesitation. It can be sad to leave a project behind so quickly, never to be touched again, so I’m at least happy knowing that I was patient enough to savor everything it had to offer.
