Special shout out to and who both had 🥈🥈finishes Friday at JJWL! Karina took on her first tournament at 🟦 belt and Sandra, alongside her son, Ethan, took on her first tournament after just 4 months of training. I wish I could bottle the tournament experience and easily share it to give all of you a better understanding of the courage and self-discipline required to compete. I’m so proud to have such an incredible group of women training at Adayama. There’s something special happening here. There is no such thing as over-night-success and our ladies aren’t the type to seek out short cuts. Keep an eye on the Adayama ladies in 2026!

Yesterday was a special one.

My friend Phi and I have known each other for more than 25 years, so watching his son Ethan win his first gold medal at JJWL Worlds after only five months of training meant a lot to me. From Ethan’s first class, you could see the focus and determination in him. Then Sandra jumped in too, and suddenly the whole family became a huge part of our academy culture.

Watching Phi and Sandra beam with pride while Ethan won three tough matches against great competition is something I’ll never forget.

Honestly, almost every night Ellen and I drive home together in shock at how lucky we are to live this life and be surrounded by such amazing families.

Was it a sweep? That was my intention. I established the guard, initiated the action, and the referee awarded me 2 points for it in the moment. After the match, though, my opponent’s coaches challenged the call, two supervisors reviewed it, and the decision was overturned, giving my opponent the win. In 17 years, I’ve only seen three matches overturned, and this was the first of any of my matches.

Was I disappointed? Absolutely. Am I losing sleep over it? Maybe a little.

But that’s competition, and honestly, I’m grateful for it. It was a privilege to step on the mats with such skilled practitioners and test myself against high-level opponents. Experiences like this remind me why I love competing and how lucky I am to live this life alongside our students and members every day.

At the end of it all, I did what I said I was going to do. I challenged myself. I followed through. I cut 20+ pounds in five weeks, shook off some rust heading into IBJJF season, and learned lessons I needed to learn.

Will I learn and improve from this? YES. Will I quit? NEVER
