Do you really need trekking poles for elk hunting?

Honestly, I wasn’t sure. Part of me wondered if people would call me a wuss for using them.

But with Adam and me preparing to hunt between 7,500 and 9,000 feet in Montana—and hopefully packing 50–70 pounds of elk meat back to camp—I decided it was time to find out.

I picked up the LEKI Legacy Lite trekking poles and took them on their first four-mile test through the hills and trails of Wisconsin.

In the new video, I share why I chose them, what I liked, what took some getting used to and whether they’ll actually make the trip to Montana.

Spoiler: If we’re fortunate enough to pack out an elk, I think these could be a game-changer.

Hill repeats, burning legs, and questionable life choices—all to get ready for chasing elk in the Montana mountains this fall. You can buy all the gear you want, but you still have to haul yourself up the mountain.
