One of the greatest movie fight scenes ever made is the elevator fight in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
This might be the closest thing I’ve seen to it in real life.

Three guys. One elevator.
And one man who understood how to make sure he never actually fought all three at the same time.
The deciding factor?
Unequal initiative.

Watch how he manipulates three things:
FORCE. SPACE. TIME.
The elevator becomes a funnel. His opponents get caught reacting. And he’s consistently one beat ahead.

Meanwhile, Green Shirt walks straight into arm’s length with no plan and bets everything on intimidation.

A lot of people think Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is about winning fights.

This is what it looks like when the goal is something different:

CONTROL.

I had the opportunity to sit down with my friend and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Master John Machado to break down an incredible example of BJJ being used in the real world.

A nurse is dealing with a hostile patient when things become physical.

Within seconds, you can tell:

This guy trains.

He gets the patient to the ground, establishes position, gets behind him and maintains control until security arrives.

No panic.
No unnecessary damage.
No need to prove anything.

And that’s what makes this one worth studying.

As Master John says during our breakdown:
“You don’t learn that in one day.”

Years of training showed up exactly when this nurse needed it.

And because he had the capability to do more, he had the control to do less.

That’s the lesson.

Most people watched the punch.
I watched where it landed.

This wasn’t a classic jaw knockout. The strike landed on the side of the neck, impacting one of the body’s highest-consequence anatomical regions.

While we can’t diagnose exactly what happened from video alone, trauma in this area can result in dizziness, disorientation, loss of balance, and in some cases, loss of consciousness.

For grapplers, this should look familiar. Every Mata Leão (Rear Naked Choke) and other vascular restraint works in this same region through controlled constriction. This strike used blunt force instead—but produced a potentially similar outcome.

Understanding anatomy matters.
Because in a real fight, where you hit can matter just as much as how hard you hit.

I never thought I’d have to analyze the tactical implications of fighting Mickey Mouse, SpongeBob and two furries... yet here we are.

After more than 30 years in martial arts and training military, law enforcement, and civilians, I can honestly say this scenario was noticeably absent from every program of instruction I’ve ever taught.

Normally I break down real-world violence.
Today, I’m just trying to figure out what the hell I watched.

There’s something special about training with people who have spent a lifetime pursuing mastery.

This week, John “Shrek” McPhee and I had the privilege of training under Master John Machado. Every session is a reminder that no matter how long you’ve trained or what rank you wear, there is always another detail to uncover, another lesson to absorb, and another opportunity to improve.

The best instructors never stop being students.

That’s the standard.

Grateful for Master Machado’s generosity, knowledge, and decades of experience. And grateful to share the journey with John “Shrek” McPhee—a man who has dedicated his life to protecting others and who continues to approach training with the humility of a student.
