Hotel and conference Wi-Fi networks are being used to push fake software updates loaded with malware, according to Microsoft threat intelligence.

Here's how it works: you connect to what looks like a normal hotel network. The captive portal prompts you for a routine-looking update or security check. That single click hands over device access. No encryption flaw required.

This is a trust exploit built on top of a captive portal, exactly the kind of social engineering vector that firewalls and encryption alone don't stop.

Not every wireless standard you need to know is 802.11.

PIM shows up in Bluetooth devices, and it's exactly what it sounds like: a way to store personal information like contacts, calendar items, notes, and email messages directly on a mobile Bluetooth device.

Here's where it gets useful. PIM Synchronization lets that stored information sync between the Bluetooth device and a personal computer. Update a contact on one, it shows up on the other.

It's a small piece of a much bigger picture, but it's a good reminder that wireless professionals don't just live in the 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz world. Bluetooth, IoT protocols, and the standards that connect them all matter too.
